If that device came to fruition I wonder if Avanti would see any Royalty income from it's sales and what scale the contract would be for bandwidth? Getting a bit ahead of myself I know but this can be good news and will raise AVNs profile

Avanti wins Flagship Technology Strategy Board Grant

4 April, 2012 - 09:00

Avanti Communications Group plc (AIM: AVN), the satellite operator, is pleased to announce the award of a £1.1 million grant from the Technology Strategy Board.

Avanti will lead a consortium of five leading UK industry partners to develop a rugged and lightweight portable satellite terminal, optimised for Avanti's Ka-band HYLAS fleet of satellites. The portable terminal will provide high speed broadband access, 3G mobile connectivity and satellite navigation services for nomadic users; including emergency services, crisis management teams, journalists and the military.

David Williams, Chief Executive Officer of Avanti, commented "We are delighted at the award of this grant, which recognises Avanti's technical expertise and the increasing importance of Ka-band in specialised applications".

Nastiness is putting it mildly but at least you can reflect on who was right and who was wrong. As to the future, I still think that another launch will appeal and get the juices flowing - especially when PIs look at what happened to the chart last time. The interesting bit will be what happens post-launch - will any rise be sustained this time or be followed by another sell-off?

SG - the pre-launch rise last time was largely built on expectations - some might say a shaky foundation. The situation has changed now in that a lot of contracts have been won and there is real evidence of earnings potential. Getting the Chief Exec of Diageo as a non-Exec Director should give additional credibility and strength to the management team. Yes there is a lot of competition o3b etc, and hopefully AVN won't get so obviously over-hyped this time (Tom Bulford et al). Quite a few posters grudgingly admitted you were right to be sceptical last time though.

your first paragraph's a bit of an exaggeration don't you think?

'all on here were shouting buy' - ?? that's not true

"Graham" is not as "super" as his name would suggest.

Like most liars, he forgets what he has said before.

"some very serious backers believe it's going to be big"

Well you could say exactly the same thing about AVN. European Space Agency, Caledonia Investments, sovereign fund of the Govt of Singapore...... I don't think they're punting on a whim. Some pretty serious due diligence will have been done on AVN's technical ability to launch the satellite, its funding arrangements and the markets and revenues it is targeting. Hylas 1 is up there and Hylas 2 will be shortly; I doubt they'll be floating around with nothing to do and no income coming in.

I said long ago this was over-priced and the idiot hype crew on here made it a perfect target for shorters. How high did they think a price could go for a company not going to make a penny for some years.

All the hype crew did was lose some PI's a load of money when they bought post launch.

The £5m sale was to beat a tax deadline that the government closed re EBF's they became taxable days after the sale.

At that time it was around a whopping £50m worth tucked away for the benefit of a chosen few. Thus i considered I couldn't trust the BOD to act in the interest of all shareholders imo.

Anyway you can see the response to my mentioning O3b, it's just a pack of wolves with one mission, and that pack cost a lot of PI's a lot of money, well done chaps. pats on the back all round.

lol you are a funny bunch. I'm the one that said sell at 7.50 when all on here were shouting buy as it was going to be £10 soon.

How much has the loan cost so far this year, must be £8m.

Jonnib very brave name calling from the safety of an armchair.

As for Ob3 i was only asking and thanks to those that answered. But whatever it is some very serious backers believe it's going to be big

jc - no-one can make sensible long term predictions imho. There are so many variables. That is why the £23 per share being pushed by the 'brokers' was so unrealistic and caught so many PIs out in the gold rush. The story-line is good - massive demand etc but there is a lot of competition out there. The sea is full of salt water but that does not make salination plants a sure bet. Technology moves so fast these days along with customer expectations. Should be a good short-term bet though with a new launch on the horizon.

dunluce, I agree completely and you beat me to it!

Jonnyno1, with respect, time and effort of posting does not necessarily translate into validity. It is fact that superg1 posted supportive comments of EK and negative comments on AVN throughout EK's shorting campaign last year. You can review yourself the hundreds of posts from supgerg1 during this period. These were based on very little fact, superg1 even suggested the BOD was corrupt but could offer no evidence of this despite my asking him numerous times.

It is no wonder therefore there is sometimes a strong reaction to his subsequent posts especially when they are always of a negative perspective.
