Freeport McMoRan (FCX -9.7%) plunges nearly 10% after Q4 earnings missed expectations as copper prices dropped, prompting it to forecast a 13% drop in copper production this year.

CEO Richard Adkerson remained upbeat in today's earnings conference call, saying "The fundamentals of the copper market point to a very positive future... Copper prices simply have to rise."

Adkerson predicted the market likely will see "really, really high copper prices... How are you going to replace the top 10 mines in 10 years? It’s not going to come from what’s on the schedule now."

The CEO said he expected "a strong desire for companies to expand their copper business," over the longer term, but opportunities for investment will be limited by geology, politics and the nature of available ore bodies.

Exploration will not be enough to meet future copper demand, which "will add to the value of Freeport’s assets," the CEO said.

It would be an "uphill battle" to see an acquisition that would make sense for FCX right now, Adkerson said, adding that companies get into trouble when try to force M&A into a strategy.

I see Anto have announced that their copper production for this year is at the top end of their forecast - fourth quarter copper production of 220,000 tons rather puts us in the shade. It expects production for this year to be between 750k and 790k tons. Can't we send Anna Soubry out to Chile to wind up the workforce.

Upon reflection that may not make sense in that if they build up a position they would have to be careful that that holding does not, when added to that of the large shareholder, take them into the range where they would have to bid for the company.Depends to a degree on whether it's Traf or Orion who wants out.

Interesting vish I suppose it's a possibility that Sandfire could be our buyer in the background in that their dd has been positive enough for them to build a position and keep their options open rather than to commit to a very big tranche at an inflated price when there are some outstanding issues. If The Touro permits come through they can then make their move.

Moving on or adding more copper ? MOD another large copper play in Botswana , although early stage

ASX announcement

Sandfire Resources NL (“SandfireR21;) notes media reports overnight referring to an approach by Sandfire to MOD Resources Ltd (“MOD”) in connection with a potential takeover offer by Sandfire for MOD.
Sandfire confirms that it has written to MOD to express its interest in exploring a potential combination of the two companies. Any such transaction would be conditional upon satisfactory completion of due diligence, the recommendation of the MOD board and execution of binding documentation, among other things.
Given the preliminary, indicative and non-binding nature of the approach, there can be no assurance at this stage whether a transaction will eventuate.

Turo will take some time (but it does not really cost us, our ownership increases as permitting / de-risked) ... ATALAYA committed to doing everything by the book. I think more interesting is closer to home , completion of crusher 2 (80% done) and Corto Atalaya expansion , moving on to mining (and widening) the RIO pit (next door).
I tested the demand this morning (dummy sell), I get a bid for 70 000 at 236p . So buyers still present.

COPPER: Chile's Cochilco state copper commission on
Thursday maintained its average price prediction of $3.05 per
pound for 2019, rising to $3.08 for 2020.

If we average $3.05 then happy days. Close to £100m EBITDA

Surely there will soon be news on Touro permitting? Does anyone know how long the process is likely to take? I thought Galicia was supposed to be mining friendly?

To be honest TT, Massive refers to the VMS or Volcanogenic massive sulfide ore deposits, also known as VMS ore deposits, are a type of metalsulfide ore deposit, mainly copper-zinc which are associated with and created by volcanic-associated hydrothermal events in submarine environments.[1]

If you take a look at the latest company release on Corta Atalaya....(15/01/19)
Their words, not mine...MASSIVE...And they're not prone to overstating,if had come from HAA possibly not.......

"Exploration is progressing well at the Atalaya pit where massive sulphides and stockwork mineralisation are being targeted. The first 2,900 m of a 19,000 m drilling campaign have already been drilled with positive preliminary results received. Geological modelling of the upper and lower sections of the orebody is in progress. Drilling around the high-grade underground workings in Filon Sur is also ongoing with 9,900 m drilled out of a programme of 17,400 m."

Just looking through the Canaccord note from 04/01/19....(can't get the photo to load)

."The adjacent Atalaya pit is older, larger and much steeper than Cerro Colorado, and
requires dewatering (see image below – this is currently being undertaken). The
orebody does reportedly have good grades near the underground portions of the pit
(lower right-hand side in the image below) where the ore is also polymetallic (other
base metals), but further exploration will be required to quantify this. The pit is
adjacent to the existing Cerro Colorado pit, so the ore could be eventually treated with
the existing plant if it proves viable. This optionality is not included in our valuation."..

And if the ADVFN computer is to be believed and it's a close call between that and the utterances of The Donald, the sells greatly outnumber the buyers. Ergo big buyer in the background.
