Anglo American forced to cut De Beers’ Expenses by $100 Million
==================================================================

Anglo American will be forced to slash De Beers’ overhead costs in response to the diamond-market downturn, the parent company has warned.

The current downturn maybe temporary, but there are few signs that the market is “beginning to turn.”

De Beers incurred a loss in the second half of 2023 following sales of just $80 million.

Unfortunately De Beers kept production steady in the second half of this year — leading to an inventory buildup.

I really fail to see the issue. It makes perfect sense to adapt production levels when demand is low and ramp back up when demand increases. This will significantly cut operational costs, force the price of base metals up especially copper which will offset largely the drop in production. And all off a Lower cost base. What’s not to like? I can see other miners considering a similar strategy. The market may not like it but it makes perfect sense.

Market report:

Glencore declined 3.8% reflecting the weak economic data from China and after it was touted as a possible bidder for Anglo American.

Anglo American tumbled 19% on Friday after lowering production targets but rallied 0.8% on Monday.

The Times noted a report from analysts at Jefferies suggesting that if Anglo cannot revive its fortunes and its share price ‘continues to lag’, it may become ‘involved in the broader trend of industry consolidation’.

Jefferies pointed to Glencore as a potential suitor.

They noted that Glencore-backed Xstrata proposed a merger with Anglo in 2009; Xstrata has since been fully subsumed into Glencore, which is in the process of buying the coal assets of Canada’s Teck to combine with its own coal assets into a spin-off company.

The analysts said that Glencore‘s strategic fit with Anglo after the Teck deal ‘appears even stronger now due to operating synergies, even greater marketing benefits, and a cost of capital arbitrage’.

Bought 40 percent more at the open the drop is way over done.I have been picking up stocks which have been overly discounted on bad news selling some and holding the gain.I can see mining stocks as leading the gains next year and some of the largest firms agree, saying tech will still rise but it won't be the leading sectorHappy trading

Anglo American plans to reduce iron ore and copper output in the near term to lower costs, as it tries to boost its share price.

AAL shares have already slumped by over 30% this year .

After the production, capex, and costs guidance on Friday, shares of Anglo American – which produces copper, nickel, platinum group metals, and diamonds, among others – fell heavily on the London Stock Exchange.

Year to date, Anglo American’s shares has lost 36%, compared to an 11% share price increase for Rio Tinto and a 5% rise in BHP’s share price so far this year.
