Amino, Netris Get Closer

MARCH 05, 2007

LONDON -- Netris (www.netris.ru), a Russian leader in IP-communications software development and system integration, and Amino (www.aminocom.com), the world leading IPTV platform supplier, have agreed to leverage their existing relationship by forming a strategic partnership to extend joint activities in growing IPTV markets world-wide, and to tighten technology integration.

Both companies have a solid track record in the Russian IPTV market, where a combination of Netris' IPSoft iVision IPTV Middleware and Amino's multi-award winning IPTV set-top boxes (STBs) is used in the vast majority of IPTV commercial deployments. From a technology point of view, the companies have been integrating their solutions closely to deliver cost-effective, best of breed IPTV systems for the growing Russian market. IPSoft iVision works smoothly with a number of Amino STBs:

AmiNET103: Amino's first ultra-compact set-top box, winner of a Red Dot Award for innovative set-top box design.

AmiNET110: Amino's popular MPEG-2 STB and first product compatible with a number of connected home adapters, reducing the costs for operators in deploying IPTV.

AmiNET125: a 2nd generation multi-codec IPTV STB designed to introduce IPTV to new users in the developing world and to second and subsequent TVs in North American and European homes. These TVs are typically standard definition, so benefit from a flexible yet cost-optimised platform with MPEG-2 & MPEG-4 video formats. The AmiNET125 has been short listed for the IPTV World Series Awards in London (ceremony to be held on 6th March 2007).

AmiNET130: Amino's advanced STB supporting High Definition, H.264 (MPEG4/AVC) video streams, modeled on the same award-winning design as previous AmiNET generations.

"Our joint success in Russia was only possible because we cooperated to integrate our products and create proven, scalable and flexible solutions tailored to Russian customers", highlighted Roy Kirsopp, VP & General Manager at Amino. "We would like to extend this success across new territories and technology developments".

Nortel Networks Ltd says it will offer its own set-top box built by the LG-Nortel Co. Ltd. joint venture to carriers as part of its IPTV strategy.
The box, not yet available, doesn't necessarily mean the end of Nortel's partnerships with set-top makers Amino Technologies plc and Tilgin AB.
"Our goal is to have an interoperable set of set-top partners to offer our customers," says Ken Couch, director of marketing for Nortel's video divison. The set-top box will be based on open standards, he adds.

Agreed, but its surely going to be easier to market their products if they win.

It might be better if they won less awards and more business.

The World IPTV Forum is on in London this week. There are three companies named for the stb award, one of which is Amino. Neither Scientific Atlanta (Cisco) nor Motorola is included. An analysts forecast for 2010 isn't worth the paper its printed on.

Cisco and Motorola were best positioned to capture new customers worldwide, said Colin Dixon, an analyst at Dallas-based Diffusion Group.
He predicted last year that their combined share of the global internet-based TV market would surge to 90 percent in 2010 from 15 percent in 2006.

23.02.2007 - An Irish digital TV company has developed its own MPEG4-high definition (HD) set-top box for internet protocol television (IPTV), it emerged today.

Cork-based DigiSoft will launch the new set-top box, which will retail at less than €75, at the IPTV World Forum in London next week as well as a hosted service delivery platform called DigiHost.

The company's Java-based set-top box will include a customisable interactive programme guide, video-on-demand capabilities and a personal networked video recorder.

DigiSoft will be aiming to target the set-top box at telecom firms and internet service providers (ISPs) keen to make their mark on the emerging digital media space.

The company will be offering telecoms firms and ISPs applications that manage the logistics of offering digital television services such as video servers, encoders, digital rights management (DRM) systems and conditional access systems.

The company's technology offering will also include an interactive advertising technology with a push-to-call feature that means TV viewers can instantly respond to a TV ad.

Cork-based Digisoft has been achieving global renown in the interactive TV space, scoring key deals with the Italian government and forging alliances with major tech players like Ericsson.

In 2005 the company received a €2.5m funding injection from Riverdeep founder and serial technology investor Pat McDonagh.

Sorry. Re the above, this is the third of the three contracts with MTNL. Amino, last time I saw any news, still was the stb supplier to the other two.

UTStarcom Partners With AKSH Optifibre to Deliver First IPTV Service in India With MTNL

ALAMEDA, Calif., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UTStarcom, Inc. , a global leader in IP-based, end-to-end networking solutions and services, today announced a three-year contract through its partnership with AKSH Optifibre Ltd. to deploy its RollingStream(TM) end-to-end IPTV solution with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) in India. The contract represents the first commercial IPTV deployment in India and AKSH Optifibre Ltd. is the first company to launch IPTV in India. AKSH is the pioneer in optifibre fiber and cable technologies and their main product is a Fiber-to-the-Home solution.

"Consumers have come to expect sterling services that are both innovative and affordable from MTNL," said Shri RSP Sinha, chairman and managing director at MTNL. "We take the lead, yet again, in ushering in a true revolution in home entertainment with the country's first IPTV service. IPTV provides an interactive viewing experience and allows for multitude of exciting revenue generating applications to be deployed. Our existing presence in more than four million homes in New Delhi and Mumbai through our broadband service will give MTNL a tremendous headstart in changing the way people watch television."

The service, which will utilize MTNL's existing broadband network as the content delivery backbone, will consist of traditional broadcast television, video- and music-on-demand, videoconferencing capabilities and time-shifted TV, allowing users to access television content on any channel up to one week in the past. All MTNL broadband subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai are anticipated to have access to the service, which launched in December 2006.

"By pricing the basic level of service at 125 rupees, we hope to attract a large number of our broadband subscribers to our IPTV service and drive revenue growth through the additional value-added services, like time-shift capabilities and video-on-demand, enabled by UTStarcom's RollingStream," Sinha added.

"This contract is a testament to both UTStarcom's worldwide leadership in the IPTV industry as well as our dominant position as a provider of innovative broadband technologies to the Indian market," said David King, senior vice president of international sales and marketing. "UTStarcom's award-winning RollingStream IPTV solution is now deployed with leading service providers in China, Japan and India, which we believe proves UTStarcom's position as the leader in IPTV deployments worldwide."

"The cooperation with UTStarcom ideally complements our know-how," said Dr. Kailash S. Choudhari, managing director at AKSH Optifibre. "UTStarcom's RollingStream offers an end-to-end IPTV solution enabling us to deliver broadcast quality TV and on-demand entertainment service programming over IP networks. This enables us to offer even more comprehensive solutions and services in the area of IPTV, now and for the next three years. The start of IPTV services with MTNL is clearing the way for deployment of Fiber-to-the-Home solutions at the subscriber's home."

About UTStarcom's RollingStream

I think your comments are pretty much right on the money, although I have less worries about inventory write offs. I would hope that they've used this period to get all the write offs and any other bad stuff, e.g bad and doubtful debts, in the shop window. That way the new Chairman and directors start with a clean sheet. Certainly, they were in a position to demand a house cleaning before signing up. We'll see. Otherwise, yes, we have nothing to look forward to until, perhaps, the end of April or May when we get a trading update. That and news on new orders/partnerships seeems the only catalyst to better price performance. Very disappointing.

Theres no doubt the lack lustre performance of AMO was the downfall of some of the previous management. AMO is operating in a fast developing market and seems to be making good progress with recent deals. Even though these poor results were expected market seems to think AMO have turned the corner, with share price rise over last few weeks.

Having digested the final results, Amino still remains a wait and see for me. The volume deliveries of MPEG4 have been delayed until the second half of 07 and are still subject to "execution risks". The trading update in October said that volume deliveries expected to start late in H2 05/06 had been delayed but did not mention a time scale. The second half of 2007 is a serious slip.
As I have previously mentioned the slip in volume deliveries could have financial repercussions. There were long lead times for MPEG4 components (5 months) for other companies and significant delivery delays could result in a right down because the value of components are continually falling. Increases in the value of Amino's stocks could be MPEG4 components. FY 04/05 £1.460m, H1 £2.653m, FY 05/06 £3.808m. Stocks could be even higher now depending upon when Amino stopped or cancelled orders.
Are MPEG2 stb sales going to slow in anticipation of the new MPEG4 boxes becoming available?
Average sales value per stb fell 18% between 04/05 (£74.84) and 05/06(£61.50) There was also an 18% fall between H1 (£67.80) and H2 (£55.60). These figures will be distorted by none stb income, but this trend implies Amino needs to sell another 100,000 MPEG2 stb's this year just to stand still.
There is no mention of making profits this year. Amino "strive to establish sustained profitability"
Cash burn of £2.8m between H1 (£16.8m) and H2 (£14m) after an improved cash position in H1.
With a market cap of £44m, cash of £14m, turnover of £25m and little prospects of a profit this year then there appears limited upside until the interims or until there are volume MPEG4 deliveries.

Hi, Rosbell

The chart has certainly turned the corner. Best picture since it topped out a couple of years ago. Let's hope that the company's fundamentals are undergoing the same change.

A bigger company in the business, Advanced Digital Broadcast, took a similar beating both in its operations and in its shares, and the shares have recently doubled off their low. See

Fingers crossed for AMO!

AMO already had contracts to supply two of the three licenced IPTV suppliers in India with stb's. Despite the statement, this DOES look like a change of strategy to becoming a licencer of software and hardware to Time's local producer. So a loss of output and output growth for AMO, replaced by licence income and licence income growth. Better a bird in the hand? Given the predisposition towards domestic suppliers in certain countries eg India and China, maybe this is the best that can be expected.
