You've seen that advert/trailer on the BBC for their weather app - 'to know what's coming ….'

If lots of water vapour escapes the oceans - we do not fully (or even slightly) understand why they cool or warm - and goes into the sky it acts as a blanket e.g. we all know generally a clear night is cooler than a cloudy one. Right now the air is at higher than normally humid (globally), carbon dioxide hardly gets a look in.

Btw the scientists say we are about to get the modern equivalent of a "Maunder minimum" and from next year to about 2050 things are going to get a lot colder - we'll see how that works out. I'll only be 85 in 2050 :-)

For those of us with land, those statistics are largely garbage and show ignorance of the natural cycle.

Animal by products are beneficial and can be part of a well managed system. Sheep drink very little/no water and create wonderful old turf over time, with their method of grazing and pooing.

What is required is population control and the removal of GDP growth as a badge of honor in the economic stakes. Moderation is the key in everything (including obesity and the use of oil).

Why does everyone always ignore the obvious?

Drewster but that's only the one side it leaves out the cost of doing away with livestock?

If extra land is then set for cereal/vegetable production it requires vast amounts of water, more tractors, more fertilisers, more herbicides, more insecticides and more harvesting, picking and transportation. More water for preparation, especially vegetable crops.

For example 1 litre of soya milk requires 297litres of water
1 soy pattie/burger requires 158litres

also worth noting that the figures for beef production are based on an incorrect assumption as are many of the other figures. They were produced originally by Dr Pimental whose calculation was flawed.

He calculated based on beef cattle being FED by hay and grain, when that is not necessary. Most beef cattle graze on grass, none of that was in his calculation. He calculated that a cow consumed 100kg of hay and 4kg of grain for every pound of beef produced. He then took a generalised assumption that it takes 1000 litres of water to produce 1kg of wheat/grain.

So his assumption which is widely quoted, is incorrect from the start, as it assumes a 100% stored feed, without taking account that most livestock are out on pastures feeding off grass, and through winter months silage supplements.

Now if his calculation is correct, it still takes 1000 litres of water to produce 1kg of wheat/grain, so cutting out livestock again does not tally up with the figures.

A: rain makes grass grow whether its eaten or not! No livestock equals more intervention using tractors etc.

B: you cannot use litres of water in assumptions where that water is rain falling on the land, and where of that water, much of it returns to the water courses in due course. You also need to separate POTABLE water use, waste water use, rainwater.

C: Perhaps then we should cut out all grain spirits? Take vast amounts of grain and water?

D: then we have the water footprint of vegetables:

Lettuce -- 15 gallons;
Tomatoes -- 22 gallons;
Cabbage -- 24 gallons;
Cucumber -- 28 gallons;
Potatoes -- 30 gallons;
Oranges -- 55 gallons;
Apples -- 83 gallons;
Bananas -- 102 gallons;
Corn -- 107 gallons;
Peaches or Nectarines -- 142 gallons;
Wheat Bread -- 154 gallons;
Mango -- 190 gallons;
Avocado -- 220 gallons;
Tofu -- 244 gallons;
Groundnuts -- 368 gallons;
Rice -- 403 gallons;
Olives -- 522 gallons;
Chocolate -- 2847 gallons; (One pound of chocolate being quite a serving of chocolate...)

With vegetables the water footprint is often amplified by virtue of the amount of POTABLE water that has to be used to clean up vegetables prior to reaching shops, let alone packaging/transport.

Its never as cut and dried as people think

The reason for this is because on a per-calorie basis, many fruits, vegetables, dairy and seafood—the foods the USDA pushes in the guidelines over sugary processed food and fats—are relatively resource-intensive, the study finds. Lettuce, for example, produces three times more greenhouse gas emissions than bacon."

I don't want to hi-jack the thread with "save the planet" talk, so this will be my last post on the matter, but consider the following:

Animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, more than the combined exhaust from all transportation.
Transportation exhaust is responsible for 13% of all greenhouse gas emissions.
Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.
Methane is 25-100 times more destructive than CO2 on a 20 year time frame.
Methane has a global warming potential 86 times that of CO2 on a 20 year time frame.
Livestock is responsible for 65% of all human-related emissions of nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas with 296 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide, and which stays in the atmosphere for 150 years.
Emissions for agriculture projected to increase 80% by 2050.
Energy related emissions expected to increase 20% by 2040.
US Methane emissions from livestock and natural gas are nearly equal.
Cows produce 150 billion gallons of methane per day.
Converting to wind and solar power will take 20+ years and roughly 43 trillion dollars.
Even without fossil fuels, we will exceed our 565 gigatonnes CO2e limit by 2030, all from raising animals.
Reducing methane emissions would create tangible benefits almost immediately.
Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) water use ranges from 70-140 billion gallons annually.
Animal agriculture water consumption ranges from 34-76 trillion gallons annually.
Agriculture is responsible for 80-90% of US water consumption.
Growing feed crops for livestock consumes 56% of water in the US.
Californians use 1500 gallons of water per person per day. Close to Half is associated with meat and dairy products.
2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce 1 pound of beef.
477 gallons of water are required to produce 1lb. of eggs; almost 900 gallons of water are needed for 1lb. of cheese.
1,000 gallons of water are required to produce 1 gallon of milk.
5% of water consumed in the US is by private homes. 55% of water consumed in the US is for animal agriculture.
Animal Agriculture is responsible for 20%-33% of all fresh water consumption in the world today.
Livestock or livestock feed occupies 1/3 of the earth’s ice-free land.
Livestock covers 45% of the earth’s total land.
Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction.
Livestock operations on land have created more than 500 nitrogen flooded deadzones around the world in our oceans.
2-5 acres of land are used per cow.
Every minute, 7 million pounds of excrement are produced by animals raised for food in the US.
A farm with 2,500 dairy cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of 411,000 people.
130 times more animal waste than human waste is produced in the US – 1.4 billion tons from the meat industry annually. 5 tons of animal waste is produced per person in the US.
In the U.S. livestock produce 116,000 lbs of waste per second:

-Dairy Cows, 120 lbs. of waste per day x 9.32 million dairy cows
-Cows, 63 lbs. of waste per day x 83.68 million cows
-Calves, 30 lbs. of waste per day x 34.3 million calves
-Pigs, 14 lbs. of waste per day x 74 million pigs
-Sheep and Goats, 5 lbs. of waste per day x 7.84 million sheep and goats
-Turkeys, .87 lbs. of waster per day x 77 million turkeys
-Broiler Chickens, .50 lbs. of waste per day x 1.74 billion broiler chickens
-Laying Hens, .25 lbs. of waster per day x 350.7 million laying hens
3/4 of the world’s fisheries are exploited or depleted.
Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of Amazon destruction.
1-2 acres of rainforest are cleared every second.
The leading causes of rainforest destruction are livestock and feedcrops.
Up to 137 plant, animal and insect species are lost every day due to rainforest destruction.
26 million rainforest acres (10.8m hectares) have been cleared for palm oil production.

one day the world will be forced to go on an "energetic online" source - sun - the originator of all the energy. then we will see what the best is. and imo it is plants.

plants provided coal, oil,.... all carbo chains - sugar in different forms more or less - from sun/plants origin

we are just super fast using the earth accumulated reserves.

wind,sun panels etc when all production energy included - can not compete with plants.the purest and best form of energy (always growing - the only real net growth ). it even provides different durations. from a berry lasting few days, corn few years, wood few decades .....
