Credit Agricole Says Russia, Ukraine Exposure Is Limited, Backs Dividend Plans

03/07/2022 | 03:09am EST

By Cristina Roca

Credit Agricole SA on Monday outlined its exposure to Russia and Ukraine and said it doesn't expect the war to affect its plans to pay a dividend for 2021.

The French bank said its activiites in Ukraine and Russia are locally operated through subsidiaries, which in 2021 posted earnings before taxes of 58 million euros ($63.4 million) and EUR5 million, respectively.

Credit Agricole said its total exposure in the two countries, including exposures booked outside the two subsidiaries, represented about 0.6% of its total commercial lending portfolio as of Dec. 31.

A large part of the bank's Russian offshore exposure consists of loans to fifteen large Russian corporates, mainly commodity producers and exporters, Credit Agricole said. The bank said that most of these exposures are rated investment grade.

"There has been no new financing granted to Russia counterparties since the beginning of the conflict," the bank added.

The bank said it plans to submit its dividend proposal to shareholders as planned. By contrast, Vienna-listed Raiffeisen Bank International AG earlier this month suspended its dividend to preserve cash in light of the conflict.

Banks haven’t quit coal. Study says commercial lenders have channeled $1.5 trillion to the industry since 2019

Key Points

Financial institutions from just six countries — the U.S., China, Japan, India, Canada and the U.K. — were found to be responsible for over 80% of coal financing and investment between January 2019 and November last year.

Coal is the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel in terms of emissions and therefore the most critical target for replacement in the transition to renewable alternatives.

Yet, even as policymakers and business leaders repeatedly tout their commitment to the so-called “energy transition,” the world’s fossil fuel dependency remains on track to get even worse.

Credit Agricole SA reported on Thursday a significant rise in net profit and net income for the fourth quarter of 2021 and said it expects to see a slowdown in growth in 2022, although it will continue to be strong.

The French bank posted a net profit for the period of 1.43 billion euros ($1.63 billion) compared with EUR124 million for the same period a year earlier.

Net income rose to EUR1.65 billion from EUR179 million for the year-earlier period. It was expected to reach EUR1.26 billion, taken from FactSet and based on six analysts' forecasts.

Revenue increased to EUR5.82 billion from EUR5.25 billion, it added.

The lender bank ended the year with a common equity Tier 1 ratio--a key measure of balance-sheet strength--of 11.9% in 2021, above its steering target of 11%, it added.

Banca Carige shares rose 3.4% following press reports that Credit Agricole has made an offer for the troubled lender.

According to Italian daily Il Messaggero, the French bank offered to buy Carige for EUR1, subject to a prior capital injection of EUR700 million from its current owner. Credit Agricole declined to comment on the report.

Carige already has a potential suitor: Last month, it received a nonbinding offer from Italian peer BPER Banca. Carige's owner said the terms of the deal weren't acceptable, but signaled it was open to negotiation.

Credit Agricole SA is investing in a car distribution and mobility company and looking to set up an automotive-financing joint venture.

The French bank's consumer-credit subsidiary said Wednesday it will subscribe to 100% of Cosmobilis's capital increase for 100 million euros ($112.9 million).

Cosmobilis is the holding company of ByMyCAR, a French car-distribution group that is expanding into new forms of mobility offerings, such as subscriptions, ridesharing, an online driving school and information-technoloogy services.

Credit Agricole Consumer Finance and Cosmobilis are also entering exclusive negotiations to set up a pan-European joint venture. The venture would be involved in all of Cosmobilis's financing activities in Europe, and would eventually become its preferred financing partner, Credit Agricole said.

The platform that the bank plans to launch after striking a deal to buy Stellantis NV out of FCA Bank--which offers financing for car purchases--earlier this week can support the new venture, Credit Agricole said.

The joint venture with Cosmobilis should launch in the first half of 2023, Credit Agricole said.

Stellantis NV and Credit Agricole SA have joined forces on long-term car leasing, they said Friday.

The two companies intend to set up a joint venture, with the aim of managing a fleet of more than 1 million vehicles by 2026, making it one of the top five European companies in long-term leasing.

The French bank's consumer finance unit would also establish a wholly owned multi-rand operator in automotive financing, leasing and mobility. CA Consumer Finance would take over 100% of the capital of FCA Bank--which it jointly developed with Fiat Chrysler--and Leasys Rent.

The companies would go ahead with the implementation of their joint plans in the first half of 2023 after consulting with employee representatives and receiving the green light from the relevant authorities.

The deal would be overall neutral for the French bank's common equity Tier 1 ratio--a measure of its capital strength.
