According to The New York Times, the company's CEO Jason Windsor admitted it was time to "remove distractions" – corporate speak for
"I'm off to 5 Hertford Street for a quick nip with Lord Snowdenshireham. Fire a few pillocks in the naming department while I'm out." |
Spud glad to read in the FT article that although Stephen Bird reputedly spent £500k on the rebranding to abrdn, that Jason Windsor spent nothing on consultants when deciding to change it back to Aberdeen (with the brand name and internet domain with a lower case a).
and from the article:-
"Bird’s case for removing most of the vowels from the company name was partly owing to the internet domain name for Aberdeen already being taken, the people said. The board, led by Sir Douglas Flint as chair, also supported Bird’s decision to use the name Abrdn, two of the sources said.
The consultancy firm Wolff Olins, which was drafted in to help with the rebrand, urged the asset manager not to switch to Abrdn. It also asked the fund group to make clear in its marketing that the consultancy, which is part of the Omnicom group, was not responsible for coming up with the name, the people added."
Lets hope the worst is now behind us. |

Having been in touch with ADVFN a few times in the past and have yet to receive a reply, I think I'll leave it for now. Hopefully it doesn't seriously impact the thread! |

Aberdeen Group plc, an investment company based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom (TADAWUL:4280), has crossed the threshold of voting rights in CVS Group PLC (LON:CVSG), a UK-based veterinary services provider.
On March 12, 2025, Aberdeen Group acquired additional shares, resulting in a total of 6.876440% voting rights in the company.
The transaction, which was notified to CVS Group on March 13, 2025, increased Aberdeen Group’s holding from the previous notification level of 5.842293%. The total number of voting rights now held by Aberdeen Group in CVS Group is 4,933,171.
This change in shareholding has been managed by the discretionary investment management entity within Aberdeen Group, specifically by abrdn Investment Management Limited. The shares are managed on behalf of clients who have delegated the exercise of voting power to the investment manager.
The disclosure indicates that the indirect holding company abrdn Investments (Holdings) Limited and the investment management entity abrdn Investment Management Limited had previously held a combined voting rights percentage that was above the 5% threshold. However, due to trading activities on March 12, 2025, their combined voting rights decreased below this threshold. |
Aberdeen Group PLC - Edinburgh-based asset manager,
The company's new name, complete with both vowels and capital letters, is registered with UK Companies House on Wednesday.
When Aberdeen earlier this month first announced plans to change its name from 'abrdn', it showed the new name as 'aberdeen group'.
On Thursday, Aberdeen says its new name is 'Aberdeen Group', while its brand is 'aberdeen'.
Aberdeen made no further comment on the name change on Thursday. The company's ticker remains ABDN, and its ISIN number is unchanged. |

Morning Skinny
Shouldn't it actually be aberdeen? ;-)
I can't seem to hit that "ABRDN-Was Standard Life", but perhaps I'm doing something wrong, or looking in the wrong place? |
In the past it has been Aberdeen Standard Life and Aberdeen Asset Management.
Its rebrand to abrdn in 2021 was largely derided, with some saying it seemed like a typo, and others joking the firm had "irritable vowel syndrome". |
The financial firm attracted much market ridicule for changing its name to abrdn from Standard Life Aberdeen back in 2021. Chief Executive Officer Jason Windsor, in announcing the latest name change, said it was aimed at "removing distractions", but the lack of capitalisation attracted yet more jests. |
CWA - I notice the name has updated automatically in the header - you should be able (if you want to) edit your bit "ABRDN-Was Standard Life".
On edit :- Forget that! |
