Most people are probably aware by now that the English Premier League football club Manchester United is a publicly traded sports team. Here, we will be revealing some of the world’s other biggest sports clubs that are also publicly traded, examples of which include Sporting CP, Borussia Dortmund, the Atlanta Braves, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Did you know that you can invest in certain major sports teams?

Did you know that it’s now possible to invest in a growing number of publicly traded sports teams from around the world? You can now purchase shares in a handful of the world’s biggest football clubs at stock exchanges and online trading sites, such as eToro. At the time of writing, the ten major football teams that you can invest in are

  • Manchester United (shares are available to purchase at the New York Stock Exchange)
  • Ajax (Amsterdam Stock Exchange)
  • AS Roma (Borsa Italiana)
  • Lazio (Borsa Italiana)
  • Juventus (Borsa Italiana)
  • Borussia Dortmund (Frankfurt Stock Exchange)
  • Benfia (Euronext Lisbon)
  • FC Porto (Euronext Lisbon)
  • Benfica (Euronext Lisbon)
  • Celtic (London Stock Exchange)

While the Green Bay Packers National Football League (NFL) team is the only publicly owned franchise team in the NFL, the team is not, in fact, publicly traded. Some of the other publicly traded major sports teams and leagues from around the world that offer stock in their companies are, in alphabetical order, the American Basketball Association, the Brisbane Broncos, the Canberra Raiders, Bali United F.C., F.C. Copenhagen, International Fight League, and F.C. Istres.

Other notable mentions include Kitchener Rangers, Odense Boldklub, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Southampton Leisure Holdings, and the United States Basketball League.

What is a publicly traded company?

A publicly traded company is a business or corporation that has made shares in the company available so that the public can invest in the company at certain major stock exchanges around the world, such as the London Stock Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and the Borsa Italiana stock exchange. When initially floated, the shares must initially be offered to the public.

Anyone can buy stocks in a publicly-traded company, and if they purchase enough, they will be able to have more of a say in what happens at the club and how it is operated at a board level. However, to reach this level and be able to affect how the company is run, someone would need to spend millions or billions of dollars (or equivalent currency value). If someone has invested heavily in a club, say Manchester United, and didn’t want to sell those shares, they cannot in any way be forced into selling them.

You can invest in these clubs in much the same way as you can in any other company, such as online sports betting sites, major supermarket chains, or motor companies, for example. Another way that you can make money from the online gambling industry without actually having to gamble is to join the 10bet Africa affiliate program, where you can potentially earn money by driving web traffic to the 10Bet site.

What can affect stock prices in a football team?

There are several factors that can affect the stock prices in a football team, and the prices can dramatically fluctuate over a certain period of time. Supply and demand of stock prices is just one such factor that can affect the prices. For example, when there are lots of shares available, the price will be lower, and when there aren’t too many available, their prices can be much higher. Some of the other major factors that can also affect the prices are

  • How much money is the team currently making – is it in debt?
  • The selling of star players or the purchasing of new players
  • Current league standing and performances, and results in recent games
  • Negative press/public scandals etc.
  • Sponsorship and advertising

How to purchase shares in one of these football clubs?

There are a growing number of trusted online trading sites where you can buy and sell commodities and cryptocurrencies at the click of a button. These same websites also now enable you to purchase stocks in certain major football clubs from around the world. For example, eToro is just one such site that allows you to purchase shares in England’s Manchester United and Italy’s Juventus football clubs. If you’re looking to invest in Manchester United, their trading stock name is MANU, and the Juventus trading name is JUVE.MI.

When investing real money in a football club or any other commodity/cryptocurrency, remember that it’s a risk, so never spend more than you can afford, and remember to keep an eye on the markets as often as possible. Some people are in it for the short game, and others are looking to invest over much longer periods of time. It would be a good idea to carry out as much of your own research into a business as possible before investing to give you the best possible chance of actually making any money.
