Rachel Reeves has issued a damning assessment of the state of the UK’s finances.

The new chancellor of the exchequer said she was inheriting a depleted economy from the Conservatives that would create a “challengeR21; for the new Labour government.

“There’s not a huge amount of money there,” Ms Reeves told the BBC. “I know the scale of the challenge I inherit.”

When you read stuff like that on the BBC website, you have to wonder whether she might want to speed up the sale of the remaining 20% or so in some way - even just a few billion flowing into the govt's coffers quickly could look like a very good idea to her in the S/T; and it just happens that NWG, LLOY and BARC, for example, are currently breaking up to new multi-year highs. Also, early action would fit in nicely with Labour's wish to 'hit the ground running'.

Whether she changes the existing plan to sell out steadily by 25/26 remains to be seen, but the opportunity is certainly out there.

State pension could be MEANS-TESTED under Labour, admits senior Keir Starmer advisor


Sir Edward Troup, a former executive for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) who has been advising Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves, said action has to be taken on pensions.

Speaking to LBC, Sir Edward claims that pensioners must "contribute possibly more" than Britons of working age in some circumstances.

In its call for the state pension to be means-tested, the HMRC official noted that pensioners are more likely to have accumulated sizable wealth than those who are younger.

"It's a benefit which you've earned, but in a sense, we've earned all our benefits by paying tax and being members of society," Sir Edward said.

"I don't think it's wrong, it's an income and actually, you do pay tax on it as it happens.

So the share price has briefly got above 328.20 this morning - a new uptrend high from last October's Q3 low and, more significantly, a 8 1/2 yr high (since before the Brexit vote). All very encouraging for the longer term and I'll stick by my very L/T TA target around £5.

Coming back to the SP, we've seen a high of 326.90 this morning, which is getting close to mid-May's uptrend high of 328.20. Since that high, the share price has tested support at 300 and then rallied to where we are today.
The obvious question is, is it getting ready to break decisively higher, or will some more corrective work be required first? Watch 328.20, as well as the vote count!

A bit last-minute, but my preferred MRP has finally updated.

The party numbers are:
LAB 453
CON..78
LIB..67
REF...7
SNP..19

I've looked at a few specific seats, as previously.

Hunt loses, with LIB having a big 18.2% majority over CON.

Sunak holds with a 4% majority over LAB.

Badenoch holds with a 4.6% majority over LAB.

LIB gains my constituency with a stonking majority of 28.9% majority over CON.

Overall, it looks like LIB are going to benefit from a huge protest vote nationally.

One postal voter told me yesterday that she finally decided to vote CON as usual, rather than LIB, as she had indicated to me earlier. I'm geared up to seeing some more of that tonight as compared with the MRP predictions.

Final YouGov MRP - this is not the one I follow, that is still awaited:

"Tory seat total would also be a record low.

Our final MRP model ahead of the general election on Thursday shows a large Labour majority and a crushing defeat for the Conservative party.

Our central projections are vote shares of 22% for the Conservatives, 39% for Labour, 15% for Reform UK, 12% for the Liberal Democrats and 7% for the Greens.

These would result in 431 seats for Labour, 102 for the Conservatives, 72 for the Liberal Democrats, 2 for the Greens and 3 for Reform UK. The SNP have 18 seats in Scotland, and Plaid Cymru 3 in Wales.
