Royal Bank Group announces, with regret, that Mr W M Wilson, a Non-executive
Director of the Company and of its principal subsidiaries, The Royal Bank of
Scotland plc and National Westminster Bank Plc died on 25 December 2003.

Sir George Mathewson, Chairman, said "Bill Wilson has served as a Director of
the Royal Bank Group with great distinction since his appointment in 1993 and
latterly as Chairman of our Audit Committee.

We will miss his wise counsel and our thoughts are with his family at this
time".
