Thanks for that Steveb. I look forward to trying it. :)

Also the explanation of the difference between GPRS and WAP was useful. I'll now look and see what my P800 is set up for as default.

Hooya,

I have a HP Jornada 928 sitting next to me and they are ok.

It is bulkier than some of the other devices and a bit slower too (i believe they are being phased out), none the less they are adequate for web surfing, making calls etc. If you can get one on the cheap it will probably do you.

As for Pay as you go, I don't know for definite, but I believe this is not possible.

Biker,

Ye with little faith. I have just finished the testing on the P800 and all is well and I will release the code after 16.30 this afternoon.

And incase you are interested, the difference between WAP and GPRS is this. GPRS (general packet radio service) works by constantly receiving packets of information and you only pay for what you download, you don't ever actually make a one-to-one connection like you would with a phone call. WAP however is more like a phone call, you make a one-to-one connection to a remote server and connect to the Internet that way. WAP tends to be a bit quicker as your contention ratio is a lot better, GPRS however is a little slower but cheaper.

Hope this answers everyone's questions

Hooya...

I bought a P800 mainly for access to share stuff, but as a bonus was able to dispense with my PDA. It is a little bulkier than conventional phones but I now only carry one little gadget instead of two.

I get confused with GPRS and WAP but whatever, you get charged by the megabyte. Only use it on sites optimised for it and don't go downloading anything with images in it or you will soon run up a big bill. I wait until I get home and download my porn on my home computer. :)

I get streaming prices on my phone from elsewhere. I waited for ADVFN to make streaming available on Macs and although eventually (about a year later) a post was put up saying that their streaming was now compatible I was never able to make it work. Consequently I wasn't going to hang around waiting for them to sort the P800.

Stevebs post above says that, subject to testing, it now works. In light of my previous experience with the Mac I would be interested to know if it does.

Cat,

I have fixed the P800 problem as promised, I just need to do some final testing before I can make the changes Live, with any luck this will either be this afternoon or tomorrow morning. If you give me a ring we can discuss furthur.

Hooya,

There are several lines of thought on the PDA with integrated mobile capabilities. Some people like them because they are a handy tool with many useful features, others hate them because they can be a bit bulky.

If you give me a ring through the help desk (just ask for Steve) I can give you some advice as to which devices work best with our site as I have had the opportunity to test quite a few through our development process.

Im confused....I thought the p800 had full internet access so why cant you view
ADVFn pages? Am I missing something. Whilst we are on the subject:-

I currently dont use my mobile phone very much and was thinking of buying a PDA
mainly for the basic "filofax" type things i.e addresses calanders, a few small
excel sheets but wasnt really worrying about viewing the net with it just yet.
However, after reading about the SPV and p800 seems they are basically a PDA and phone in one and I was thinking of buying one. Is it better to get one of these phones or get seperate PDA and Phone?? also I am a bit confused by how they charge for the access to internet. Ive read that viewing pages is free and wap sites but not downloads, is that correct? Initially I was thinking of buying a second hand one and putting my pay as you go sim in it. So i can use the PDA applications and use my phone as normal, then maybe get a contract later down the line. Is this possible or do they only work on certain contracts?

Not yet, but we're working on it now. Officially we only support pocket pc 2002, but we're happy to support popular formats if we can.

Thanks all,

Looks like we're getting there, but we need to wait until
data down loads are cheaper on 2.5 or 3G networks.

I think the PDA's could handle it now, but would be expensive.

Guss.

The Pogo PDA works quite well on your normal pages. Have you considered a special ADVFN offer on their new nVoy?

Yes, but its probably going to depend on specifically which browser software is installed on the palm.. as there are many different ones. Thus its a testing issue more than anything else.
