Had labour treated NRK shareholders same as Lloyds/Rbs, late shareholders would be breaking even (as Lloyds/Rbs) with further growth potential, and even takeover possible (ala Bingley, Alliance & Leicester etc) .

Lets hope the new government see their way to recognising this, and consider returning at least a portion of investors monies as part of any IPO prospectus. As effectively the key shareholder, they can influence this.

They could float at x pence, and issue free shares at x - y% (say) to former investors.

I think most people would be happy with that. At a stroke, it would make reasonable amends for the mess labour made of NRK, recognise the risk inherent in normal share investments, restrospectively realign the Rock with Lloyds, RBS, have fantastic political PR for the new government, and save a fortune on the legal suits/fees.

e.g value new Rock at £10bn, issue 5bn £1 shares for normal take-up, and 10bn 50p shares. Give the 50p shares to prior shareholders proportionate to their former holding. The IPO would therefore result in former value being returned to investors as they own £1 shares for 50p.

Well FWIW, that's my solution to the debacle (although I was not/am not a Rock shareholder). Vince/Chancellor are you listening?

In terms of timing, its something new Govt could announce right now for delivery in the Autumn when usually markets rise. If they leave it too long e.g. till end of this year, early next), they'll loose the political advantages in my view.

Can anybody help?
I hold £5000 of nrk. Shall I register this money as a loss for the financial year or next year or is it still live and might we expect a little compensation? Sorry for being dim but I am not sure really sure where I stand.

All NRK holders remember which way to vote Brown out next election: or better still, register your anger by simply not bothering.

I do hope SRM Global et al take this to the European court.

My thoughts:

Value of NRK now = Value of 'good' bank - value of 'bad' bank.

The bad NRK bank may not be 'all bad' in time though (evidence 4 Nov in NRK statement trend on the bad is changing positively), and as a recovery returns (similarly bad bits of Lloyds/RBS). Therefore the shareholders must have grounds for seeking a return of NRK to its previous state with a value (possibly the value of £1.5bn?)

Clearly Branson believed (and it would seem still believes) there is value. The Government, regulatory authorities should have listened to him instead of playing politics with things/companies it cannot hope to understand. I note B&B, alliance & Leicester are still viable entities under the Santander umbrella.

The government in my view was plain wrong to assign NRK a nil value on the grounds it would be bust if they had not bailed it out.

If they were correct, the logic follows that no one should contemplate buying new shares in RBS/Lloyds as they were (probably still are given new bailout monies needed today) in a much worse position. This includes the government which is raising its stake with our money...so we are paying some xxBn's more for a worthless asset ?? The sp's for these 2 banks indicate the banks still have a present & future value.

RAB, SRM, small investors in my view have good grounds for their legal case if comparisons are made with the Governments' inconsistent approach viz a vie Lloyds/RBS. Hopefully the government will loose - they deserve to fail on this issue for robbing shareholders (owners) with virtually no consultation..

What a shambles.

ps I am not, nor have I been a shareholder in NRK for the last 2 years.

IMHO the Govt created a false market in NRK in its last 6 months of trading by propping up the bank with Govt funds but not informing shareholders that if NRK was nationalised that they would pass a law to value NRK on the basis that the funding had been withheld. Therefore, NRK shareholders have my sympathy and good luck with the appeals although it may be some years before you get any compensation. You were robbed by the Labour Govt. Some eminent Peers have expressed concerns at the legality (presumably they meant European legality) of the Government's action after nationalisation - the records are in Hansard.

I don't think it will be up to Mr Brown (or any UK Prime Minister)... it will go to the European Court... there are wider issues at stake than just what ex. NRK shareholders do or don't get.

The law passed to enable the UK Gov. to take NRK raises many far-reaching issues.

P.S. The UK Shareholders Association Northern Rock Action Group sent this in a recent email:

"We have been sending people who have received this email a copy of our email newsletter for some time, free of charge. According to our records however you have never contributed financially to the campaign for justice and fair compensation for Northern Rock shareholders, unlike many of our supporters who have. Therefore this is the last newsletter we will be sending you unless you wish to contribute now. It is impossible to run this kind of campaign and fund the legal costs without adequate financial support, and therefore we ask you for the last time to help us. "

I didn't realise that sending emails was expensive.

Beware of that chap running the Northern Rock Shareholder action group.
All he does is demand £5 a share off the gov't and says he has a legal right to compensation.
The Govt were planning to wait until the public feeling against bankers died down and compensate NRK holders either with a small payout ex gratia, or by offering the opportunity to buy into a new private company (possibility of Tesco shares) at a reduced price, but that guy is crazy
He is having the effect of making the only option not to pay compensation because whatever they offer he will make ridiculous demands that no govt can agree to.
The govt would not want to face a case by BB. holders incl rights issue holders
but with NRK there is no legal case for compensation, but they gave him a hearing but instead on negotiating he debunked everything they said and demanded £5 (making his hedge funds a 400% profit) (politically unacceptable)
They also offered to pay good compensation to ordinary holders but he insisted the same went to the hedge funds who got in at under £1
NRK holders have simply been unlucky, they invested in what all commentators thought was an excellent stock, but as with any investment, if your entire business model falls apart and you cannot trade, you go under
That happened here and the govt owe holders nothing. That chap's mad behaviour looks set to ensure that the best option for Gordon B. is to pay nothing, because whatever they offer he will just claim it proves compensation is owed and demand £5 a share. He is a crazy man, I know him.

An article in The Mail On Sunday July 20th page 16, reports how the publicly owned Co has hired Schillings to allegedly hound Mr Andrew Kirkland who is alleged by NRK to be the Mr Big behind the whistle blowing of the secret double pay deals for rock bosses and the alleged closing down of customer accounts and branches, all allegations are denied by Andrew. Andrew has suffered as a consequence of the alleged bombardment of Schilling's tactics of alleged hounding Andrew by phone email etc, whereas legal costs have been racked up allegedly in excess of £150,000 which are increasing substantially. If we all bombard Schillings and NRK with our disgust at the alleged tactics then maybe they will realise the public anger and concern surrounding the whole phoney NRK debacle.. If NRK is now public, we, the public, should hound NRK and Schillings and explain to them, as taxpayers, this continued litigation against an innocent man, which is not in the best public interest, must stop and stop right now. After all it is us who will eventually pay the cost of this absurd litigation carried out in our name. If that does not work bombard the Chancellor and tell him to inform this public company NRK to cease this costly and unreasonable and possibly unlawful litigation. Remember Mr Adam Applegarth who presided over the collapse of NRK walked away with £780 grand. Andrew has been hounded to the brink of suicide and financial ruin. This is a financially corrupt and one sided situation, where a public Co is using public money using expensive litigation to hound an alleged whistleblower giving up what is public information from being brought into the public arena, that cannot be right, reasonable, proper or fair. Andrew Kirkland is right to make his stand and I hope this insane litigation fails against him and all those who instigated such a futile litigation are brought to book and kicked from the euphamistic pillar to post, there are even allegations of Andrew being forced to sign a gagging agreement in return for discontinued litigation. I say let it go to the High Court, let us all hear the full sordid story of the NRK agate affair. After all Andrew has nothing to lose, but the NRK and its Management past and present have much to lose, taking the taxpayer with it..Power to Andrew Kirkland. NRK and Schilling's have the right to reply. But I hope they start legal proceedings against everyone and all who dare to pull their ill-advised instructions up to public scrutiny. Bring it on !!!! as we can be empowered now to fight alleged financially wasteful litigants.
