BTR plc announces today that it is its intention to appoint
Robert Bauman to the Board as a non-executive director and
Deputy Chairman. Elwyn Eilledge, the Chairman of BTR, has
indicated that he plans to retire at the next Annual General
Meeting in  May 1998, and the Board will ask Robert Bauman to
succeed him as non-executive Chairman at that time.

Robert Bauman, Chairman of British Aerospace plc since 1994,
was Chief Executive of SmithKline Beecham and is a non-
executive director of Reuters.

Elwyn Eilledge, Chairman of BTR, commenting on the proposed
appointment, said:

"I am delighted to have identified in Bob Bauman, a highly
respected industrialist with an outstanding track record who is
ideally qualified to guide BTR, in partnership with Ian
Strachan, through the implementation of our strategy to refocus
the group.

"Since I became Chairman,  I have begun the process of
restructuring the Board  to ensure that it encompasses the wide
range of knowledge and experience within the international
business and financial communities, which the Group needs in
the new competitive environment in which it operates.  In
addition, we have embarked on a fundamental restructuring of
the group, which will provide a sound basis for the future
development of BTR.  I believe Bob will be the ideal person
to help BTR continue that process."

Robert Bauman, commenting on his future role, said:

"I am very pleased to have been asked to join the Board of BTR
and to take over as non-executive Chairman.  I look forward to
working with Ian Strachan and the Board at what is clearly an
important time in the development of the Group."

The Board's intention is  that Robert Bauman will take up the
position of non-executive director in October following an
Extraordinary General Meeting.
