                    BTR APPOINTS ADRIANA STADECKER AS
                       DIRECTOR, HUMAN RESOURCES

BTR plc yesterday announced the appointment of Adriana Stadecker as Director,
Human Resources with effect from 21 July 1997.  A direct report to BTR's Chief
Executive, Ian Strachan, Adriana will also become a member of the Group's
Executive Committee.

Adriana Stadecker's experience includes a number of senior human resource
positions over a thirteen-year career with Digital Equipment Corporation where
she rose to become Vice President, Executive Operations in 1992.  In this latter
role, she led the restructing of the company into customer-focused business
units while concentrating on re-engineering the company's core processes.  In
1994, Adriana left Digital to found the HR consultancy, Epic International.  As
President of Epic International, she advised units of companies such as
Georgia-Pacific, Fidelity Investments and Sun Microsystems on change management,
leadership development and organizational effectiveness.

BTR's current Director, Human Resources, Barry Williams, is leaving the company
to devote more time to other interests.  He will remain a consultant to the
Group.

Commenting on the appointment, Ian Strachan said:  "I am delighted to welcome
Adriana Stadecker to BTR.  I am sure her experience in human resources and in
helping international companies to manage the change process that a new strategy
necessitates will enable her to make a valuable contribution to the Group."
