BTR PLC - PURCHASE OF OWN SHARES AND AMENDMENT

BTR plc announces that it has today purchased for cancellation
200,000 of its ordinary shares from Cazenove & Co. at a price
of 98.75p per share.

The announcement on 8 October 1998 should have read that BTR
plc had purchased for cancellation 6,965,381 of its ordinary
shares from Cazenove & Co. at a price of 101.4937p per share
(rather than 101.4397p).
