Purchase of Own Securities

BTR plc announces that, on 9 April 1998, it purchased for cancellation
7,942,722 Ordinary shares (25 pence nominal value) from Cazenove & Co. and
Credit Suisse First Boston at a price of 198.79p per share.  This repurchase
was carried out, as envisaged in this mornings announcement and the circular
to shareholders, in respect of BTRs proposed return of capital. The repurchase
was carried out in order to ensure that the redemption proceeds of the
proposed B preference share issue are treated as a return of capital for tax
purposes and not as a part distribution. The completion of this repurchase is
one of the conditions to the implementation of the proposals described in the
circular.
