Trading at 297/298 against 280 offer from General Dynamics. Rival bidder in the offing?

Usually better to sell and take the premium in these cases. A rival bid of 300p would surely be a high price for ALV. Hmmmmm

I am still in these and it looks like they are bouncing off their two year uptrend and 200 day moving average:

140 looks to be good support, first target is for a run back up to the recent highs at 165/70. Divi yield still 3.5%+

Still moving on the strength of this acquisition - divi yield is still decent.

I would agree this stock has great potential, and the acquisition of Vickers is one of the necessary steps. Price reflects the fact that the main product is Challenger 2 & derivatives, lack of success in export markets means that the order book is drying up fast. Plus Alvis will presumably be liable for the redundancy/rationalisation costs that surely are on the way.

Next step for me is that the UK army now needs a new generation of light armoured vehicles to meet the new expeditionary concept - which means air transportable plus suited to the new Navy amphibious warfare ships. Hopefully news on the MRAV will not be too long in coming - this has the potential to be huge.

And ALV is now the sole UK armoured vehicle producer, with strong Scandinavian links. Corporate activity in rationalising the international industry a possibility?

Nice move today on this news:

"LONDON (AFX) - Alvis PLC said it and Rolls-Royce PLC have reached agreement
on the sale of Vickers Defence Systems (VDS) and associated businesses to Alvis for 16.2 mln stg as it also said that current trading for 2002 is in line with market expectations."

I agree. I have been watching ALV since about Feb 2001 and finally bought today. What made up my mind to buy apart from the fudamental attractions was a combination of the price rise and the thought that after the budget, which is likely to contain defence spending increases, Jeff (or is it Geoff?) Hoon might announce specific expenditure that could benefit ALV. Time will tell.

Breakout today - new 2.5 year+ highs. I reckon this sets up 190/200 next.

Hi JJwet,

I have held ALV since last year when I bought at 82p. You are correct when you say they have full order books and I have also read the strong buy recommendation from the wrongprice.com. My fingers are crossed and from what I can gather the results come out on or about the 14/15 March, so the recent price increase might tell a story, anyway it is encouraging to see it stay reasonably level during these troubled (FTSE) times.

I do not know anything about the possible takeover of Vickers but I think they declared they were in talks not so long ago. To aquire Vickers would make sense and would certainly strengthen their position as an Global Armoured Vehicle manufacturer.

In my opinion ALV is a reasonably safe stock to invest in and I shall be watching their progress with interest on the build up to their final results. However, what do I know? Do your own research and don't invest based on my post above, speak to others more knowledgable.

Good luck all!
