Posted at 22/4/2010 19:59 by buywell2 8:34 am, April 21, 2010 Sunrise seeks to take advantage of increased barite demand Macclesfield-based exploration company Sunrise Diamonds (AIM:SDS) said the results from a preliminary testing programme at the Derryginagh barite mine in Ireland were positive. In a statement to the stock exchange, Sunrise said it is targeting the Derryginagh barite deposit for the production of high-value white barite for use as a mineral filler in paints and plastics. Barite is the mineral form of barium sulphate. The next stage of work will be to access the dry upper levels of the old mine workings previously mined between1864 and 1922 - to collect larger representative samples for more detailed test work. It is hoped the results will enable the company to design a low cost plant for the production of saleable barite concentrate. Sunrise's chairman Patrick Cheetham welcomed the results, saying: "Our concept for Derryginagh is for a modest-sized underground mining operation feeding a low cost gravity separation plant producing high-value product. "We believe that such an operation can be set up at a relatively low capital cost and produce valuable cash flow for the company." Sunrise is hoping to take advantage of an increase in demand for white paint-grade barite in Europe. There is currently no major mine supply outside of China and India and as a result Sunrise said there is a niche opportunity for a new European supplier as China's own internal demand limits traditional exports. The price currently quoted for white paint grade barite is between £195 and £220 a tonne delivered in the UK. Initial tests at Derryginagh produced a very high-grade barite concentrate that exceeds the required chemical specification for the purest and highest value white filler grades of barite. Colour testing, carried out by an existing buyer of filler grade barite, was also favourable. Barite is an environmentally friendly, non-toxic natural product, which is used as an industrial filler in paints, plastics, brake linings and acoustic panels. It is also used as a weighting agent in oil industry drilling muds. It is chemically and physically unreactive, has a high specific gravity, and low oil adsorption. |

Posted at 18/12/2009 11:30 by benchmark Apologies to sds shareholders as this is slightly off-topic. Goldeneye - a glance at CDG's share price says that it is obvious that your "mark my words" isn't being heeded by the market in general! I have been watching mineral (as well as O & G) exploration activity in Ireland for over 30 years. There have been several gold plays that have petered out. Environmental concerns will, in my view, ensure that mining and the associated dirty extraction process won't happen here. The extrememly low concentrations at which AU occurs in rock (I mean relative to the concentrations for metals such as Pb, Zn and Cu) mean that huge amounts of ore have to be processed to extract relatively tiny amounts of gold. The consequential impact on the terrain and the environmental risks are clear. Any mining major will be well aware of this and will have had an eye on the massive local difficulties that Shell are facing in attempting to bring gas ashore in Co. Mayo. Neither CDG nor Conroy himself are taken seriously here in Ireland. A difficult man to deal with - the Galmoy lead-zinc mine could only be developed when it was finally taken out of his hands. The lessons for SDS and for us, its shareholders, in relation to the Bantry licence - barite is possible and perhaps silver too. But write the gold totally out of the equation. |
Posted at 16/12/2009 23:17 by goldeneye5 Benchmark, you are wrong about ANY part of Ireland as CDG will will see gold mined in monaghan within a few years, mark my words. If not CDG, then a major that buys them out.Not sure what to make of SDS, i will keep them on my watch list. Thought either SDS or KDR might have done something in finland, but looks like this has faded away. |
Posted at 29/10/2009 11:31 by arf dysg Haven't we already got assets in Finland which are further advanced? The share price shouldn't be going up now, based on kimberlites which haven't even been discovered! |
