Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen will no longer attend a
forum hosted by the European Central Bank in Portugal this week, a
Fed spokesman confirmed Monday.
The U.S. central bank chief was set to participate in a panel on
Wednesday featuring Bank of England Gov. Mark Carney and European
Central Bank President Mario Draghi. The panel has since been
canceled in the wake of Britain's historic decision to leave the
European Union and Mr. Draghi is now expected to attend a summit of
EU leaders in Brussels on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Ms. Yellen is now in Basel, Switzerland, attending the annual
meeting of the Bank for International Settlements.
"Chair Yellen will not be participating in the Wednesday policy
panel as originally scheduled," a Fed spokesman said Monday. "She
will be returning to Washington following the BIS meetings."
The spokesman would not comment on whether the Fed's policy
committee held any meetings by conference call over the weekend
following the so-called Brexit vote.
In a statement Friday, the Fed said it was "carefully monitoring
developments in global financial markets" in cooperation with other
central banks, and was prepared to provide liquidity to foreign
financial institutions as a way to calm volatility in financial
markets.
