Thats why these people work for companies like RBS.

Alone they would be bankrupt within hours.

Unfortunately these phlebs can only work for companies that spend other peoples money so they can lose it all without redress but get huge bonuses if they manage to break even.

Shares in Yule Catto are among the top fallers on Britain's FTSE 250 index , off 5.4 percent, as RBS cuts its rating on the specialty chemicals maker to "hold" from "buy" on valuation grounds.

RBS, in a note, says one reason for its "buy" rating on Yule Catto was the company's attractive valuation, but given the recent strong share price performance, it no longer trades at a significant discount against its peers.

RBS says much of the recent share price advance seen by the company has been spurred by bid rumours, but the broker believes an acquisition is "not very likely".

"Yule Catto produces mainly commodity chemicals, something that most chemical companies attempt to reduce, not increase, exposure to; and it is at the moment integrating the acquisition of PolymerLatex. We believe a takeover at this stage would jeopardise successful integration."

Furthermore, RBS notes that end markets remain weak, with fellow specialty chemicals producer Akzo Nobel having recently issued a profit warning, and that volatility in raw materials is generally a negative for the sector.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

note akzo nobel are paint and varnish makers which are largely linked to diy and the building industries, so a different sector altogether imo

Dunno if this got posted here on Tues:

"City chatterboxes said that an approach was likely to come in at either 350p or 375p-a-share, sending Yule Catto surging 19.4p to 249.4p, a jump of over 8%. They also reckoned that if the Americans do pounce, European players could wade in too and start a bidding war......

Lovely breakout - no resistance till £3+ too.

A bidding war at between 350p and 375p will do me fine :-)

Big volume the past two days and massive volume in May looked a signal - I missed that then.

oohroger - yes they would - any discussions or request to discuss would have to be announced - these rules are yet to be finalised but have already been through their public consultation period

If passed any other offerors would have to identify themselves, and there would be a requirement to say when talks breakdown, or update the market periodcially if talks are progressing but no formal offer made.

This would be done via a 'put up or shut up' clause - either you make an offer within 28 days of announcement, or you don't (or you get approval for a deadline extension) and you announce this to the market

Additionally the views of employees (normally via a union, or other representative) would be published in the market - thus giving you their inside views as to the merits of the offer

If this is just smoke, these are going to come back quite a bit when it disperses I would guess.

Can't bring myself to jump, yet.

As STEVENLONDON3 said "cheap fundamnetals with possibility of a bid must appear a low risk bet for some investors"...

Anyway this from FTAlphaville....

NH
this Yule Catto bid story
NH
won't die
Yule Catto and Co PLC (YULC:LSE): Last: 250.70, up 7.5 (+3.08%), High: 253.50, Low: 243.20, Volume: 955.11k
NH
i wonder
NH
we get the rumours
NH
then we get the approach?
NH
it's happened a few times recently
NH
and this company is way more interesting that we had given it credit for
BE
Really? Haven't looked at it properly for years, truth be told.
BE
What's interesting in latex?
NH
well first
NH
they have a big shareholder
NH
Kuala Lumpur Kepong
NH
this is owned by some billionaire
NH
and some people think he's been approached for his stake
NH
19%
NH
via HSBC
NH
the sort of people that could be interested are
NH
BASF
NH
Clariant
NH
Dow Chemical
NH
and something called Styron
NH
Now
NH
this company is interesting
NH
is because
NH
the rubber glove market is growing very quickly
NH
10-15% a year
NH
the reason for the growth
NH
is that every time you visit the dentist
NH
they change gloves for a different patient
NH
the same in hospitals
NH
and then there's synthetic rubber gloves
NH
which are growing fast
NH
because people are allergic to rubber
BE
I see.
BE
And, multiply that over emerging markets and you come up with some proper growth.
NH
indeed
NH
and Yule Catto
NH
have corned this market
NH
they won't admit
NH
but the recent deal they did
NH
gave them something like a 40% market share
NH
don't know how they got it past the regulators
NH
but they did
NH
it was also their biggest rival
NH
and huge in Malaysia
NH
where most of the world's rubber comes from
BE
What was the name of the acquisition again?
NH
The PolymerLatex Group, headquartered in Germany, is an established player in the development, production and distribution of emulsion polymer products.
NH
they bought in December
NH
and this was the reasons offered as to why
NH
Specifically, the Directors believe that the Acquisition of PolymerLatex delivers a number of strategic benefits to Yule Catto, including:

- building Yule Catto's position in the xSBR latex market by adding European manufacturing assets, new end markets and applications development capabilities, enabling Yule Catto to compete more effectively in this market segment;
- providing Yule Catto with access to additional modern, purpose-built nitrile latex capacity in Malaysia, offering the opportunity to expand Yule Catto's product offering in the growing synthetic latex protective gloves market. The PolymerLatex Group's manufacturing facilities in Malaysia also offer growth opportunities for Yule Catto in xSBR in the Asian market; and
- providing Yule Catto with access to additional manufacturing process expertise, research and development and technical service capabilities.
NH
there you go
NH
rubber gloves a growth market
NH
and once again
NH
we discover a world leading gem
NH
among the FTSE 250
NH
amazing how many decent industrial companies
NH
you can find
BE
As demonstrated by the increasing number of bids in that band recently.
NH
indeed
