Yep! Vauxhall Astra 1600 automatic. (D Reg) Already done over 1000 miles in it in around 3 weeks including a week away on my yacht when, obvioulsy, no driving was done.

Got offered £4,800 for the Rover by the insurance company and am still awaiting the cheque.

On another matter the Vauxhall was registered as "disabled" class and therefore no tax. I registered it in my name and told Swansea that I wanted the registration changed. I had the log book returned in my name still registered as disabled. When I rang I was told that I had to go to my "local" DVLA office to get the taxation class changed.

Why?

It is clear that the civil service bureacracy in this country is not getting any easier.

darias: I trust you went the £300 vauxhall route. the value at that end of the spectrum is remarkable. there's a tradeoff for 'pulling' power of course, but those attracted more by brainpower generally have their own wheels anyway.

This is a very interesting idea, I must set up a spread sheet and see if this concept would apply to me too.

One thing though, was the accident on the M1 caused by the old/faulty Astra?? And what is the NCAP rating of the 18 year old car. Now we mustn't overlook safety especially if you are inclined to get involved in skirmishes on the motorway.

Well the other day my car got written off on the M1. (Sorry for the hold up but it wasn't my fault)

I did some calculations and after having a VOLVO for three years on a lease and the Rover 75 for 3 years. I calculated that I had spent £3000 a year on depreciation. On my mileage that is 15p a mile.

I cannot afford, nor can my clients, 15p a mile and so I heard about an 18 year old Vauxhall Astra 32000 on the clock and only £300. If the car lasts two months I am quids in and as it is MOT till November I reckon I should be saving around £1,500 this year and if it lasts till November 2005 that is £5,700. Buying a new car is not for me.
