26/11/2013 20:37 | Going to be a close one... Telegraph market report Index review looms over William Hill The bookmaker has seen its shares come under pressure since joining the FTSE 100 earlier this year Life in the FTSE 100 has not been easy for William Hill, the bookmaker joined London's benchmark index at the start of May, shares in the company have declined 11pc. If the falls continue, the company will be at risk of returning to FTSE 250 in next month's index reshuffle. A profit warning in early October did not help the bookie's cause, but Shore Capital (Other OTC: CGHC - news) analysts said today that sharp declines in Hill's share price began in August, in the wake of the group's first-half results. A host of worries have dampened investor enthusiasm for the group, including concern about sports results not going its way, slowing growth in gambling machine play and nervousness about Hill's ability to "harness" mobile gaming, the Shore experts said. However, do not give up hope, as 2014 could well be the year that sees Hill "rediscover its mojo", they argued. That's because the bookie stands to benefit from the football World Cup in Brazil, as well as the introduction of new mobile content and the roll-out of "next generation" Eclipse gaming machines. Indeed, Shore Capital isn't the only broker detecting a revival in Hill's fortunes. On Monday, Ivor Jones of Numis Securities argued that the outcome of Premier League football matches since the start of November suggested that the string of unfavourable results had come to an end. "Soccer typically accounts for over 25pc of William Hill's sports betting revenue, we believe, and so the group's financial results are sensitive to the outcome of soccer results," he said. "It looks like November is returning to normal. "So far, in the English and Welsh Premier League, 45pc of matches have had bookmaker-friendly draws or underdog wins, up from only 37pc in October and closer to last season's average of 47pc." The positive broker comment helped Hill rise 3½ to 378½p. The bookie has just a fortnight to ensure it retains its blue-chip status, with the results of the next FTSE index review based on market valuations at the close on December 10. | philanderer

AnalystRatings.Net Nomura's analysts said: "William Hill's share price has underperformed the FTSE All share by 8% over the past three months on adverse sporting results and concerns over the quality of its newly bought Australian operation." But Nomura added that improving margins, the Australian opportunity and its valuation - which makes it "now the cheapest bookmaker" - are a reason to buy the stock. A total of 11,000 people downloaded the app in less than a week since it came on the market and William Hill expects that it will see just short of 32,000 winners before the end of the year. Looking at the reasons for the app's early success, William Hill points to its new advertising campaign that was produced by London production company Art and Graft. It was first aired on November 8th and markets William Hill's £1 million giveaway promotion, which will run until the end of the year. Director of gaming at William Hill James Curwen said: "It has been a fantastic take-up and our new ad campaign has played a massive part it gives a fantastic visual representation of what William Hill Vegas is all about and, once again, our customers have responded. | philanderer
