Could double again in the next six months if they do a deal with the £20m of cash it has?

IHT Portfolio update: Volex
Volex has been another steady performer for Questor’s Inheritance Tax Portfolio. Nick Hawthorn of Downing, the fund manager, said: “It has been turned around in recent years by a dynamic management team who own almost 30pc of the shares.

“We invested in May 2018 and since then they have upgraded earnings expectations five times through acquisitions, organic revenue growth and ‘self-helpR17; initiatives to generate sustainable margin improvements.”

Since we tipped the stock in August 2018 the forecast 2020 operating profit has increased from $20m to $30.5m – a 50pc upgrade, versus a share price up only a few per cent. “Volex trades at around a 40pc discount to its peers, which we think unwarranted given the earnings upgrades, cash generation, net cash on the balance sheet and growth potential,” Mr Hawthorn added.

The firm has also announced a return to the dividend list.

Commenting on the outlook for the electric cars’ market given Volkswagen has boosted its EV production target to 1.5m by 2025, Harry Merrison, Investment Manager at Kingswood, said: “Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) production peaked in 2018 and is now in decline as the world moves towards cleaner solutions. Volkswagen Group has pioneered an innovative electric chassis as part of its mission to become the leader in battery-powered vehicles. With an investment of €30bn until 2023, VWGs business model licenses the pioneering electric platform to third parties for more traditional coachbuilding.

“History shows that when a technology becomes cheaper, innovative applications are developed. Electric bikes, skateboards and scooters are a common sight on our roads. On water too, the first commercial vessels are being launched; Ellen, a Danish electric ferry capable of carrying 30 vehicles and 200 passengers has been in operation since the summer but progress takes time. Limitations include raw materials for battery production, the current smattering of available charging stations and mileage range that some EVs can achieve. The opportunity is, however, significant given the inevitability of the technologies future monopoly."

"Tesla Inc. delivered 112,000 electric vehicles in the final three months of last year, enough to meet Chief Executive Elon Musk's ambitious growth goal for 2019.

All totaled, Tesla delivered 367,500 vehicles in the year against a target of handing over at least 360,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles, the company said Friday.

The full-year figure represents a 50% increase from 2018. It punctuates the dramatic rise in output Tesla has achieved from 2016, when the Silicon Valley auto maker revealed the mass-market Model 3. The car was the centerpiece of Mr. Musk's bet that he could transform the electric-car maker from niche luxury player into a more mainstream car company.

Fourth-quarter deliveries rose 23% from a year earlier and beat analyst expectations for 106,000 vehicles.

Sales of the Model 3 fueled the year's growth. Deliveries of the Model 3 continued upward momentum from the third to the fourth quarter, rising 16% to 92,500 in the final three months. That was a 47% increase from the final quarter of 2018."

Plus two other majors placing orders with Volex for EV leads.

Imatsu - could turn out to be a wise move but after showing that much patience I fear you may live to regret that move if the company can deliver on the strategy. I'm sticking around as I think they will. I also got in sub £1.

imatsu - great to hear you've made a profit; I remember your posts well - I've held since 2012 (but haven't posted on this board since 2014 and now it seems to be inhabited by P&D merchants) - and the frustrations at the poor performance over the years.

I only got into profit when it cleared £1 and your advice in the last paragraph is very wise as I was averaging down without realising how bad things were so felt too exposed to pick up a significant amount when it reached the lows.

I'm sticking around as I rate the current management and strategy but all the best in your investments.

Right, after eight years and an awful lot of buying, up to 300,000 of these at prices down to 35p at one point, I have finally disposed of my last set. Been quite a ride and at times I have despaired given the various clueless sets of management And my own failure to realise how bad they could get. Made a reasonable return and it could’ve been more if I’d held all 300,000 until the current prices, but I’m very, very pleased to be out.

It has taken a long time for even the current management to gain traction in terms of product, location, legacy issues and frankly share price. Right now I finally feel that the risk reward is relatively flat. There is clearly potential for more upside given the windfall is that is electric car cabling. But there is also the execution risk of being able to deliver profitable implementation of this and the other aspects, and the price could be (not is, could be) vulnerable given that the historic track record and also how much successful implementation is already priced in.

The other major factor in these is just the simple liquidity issue, it’s very hard to get rid of significant quantities once problems set in and I just don’t want that risk anymore after all these years. Frankly I’m staying well clear of AIM stocks from hereon, and will just continue with the FTSE 100 and 250 stocks primarily.

I wish you all well and if there’s one thing I would advise this is do not ever go in too heavily on these or any other small stock.
