Stubborn inflation and the threat of a recession may lead some shoppers to cut back on nonessential items, but that doesn't apply to their favorite mascara or face mask. The drive to feel and look good - and to enjoy a little luxury at a lower price point than a spa treatment or a vacation - propels shoppers to keep spending on beauty products even when they're shelling out more money on food and other essential items, and facing down a potential recession. This is part of a well-known pattern of behavior called the lipstick effect. As consumer sentiment declines, sales of lipstick rise because consumers, when they're feeling down, look for a pick me up," said Larissa Jensen, vice president and beauty industry advisor at Circana, formerly NPD and IRI, a retail market research and analytics company.

In the retail sector, the Confederation of British Industry reported a deepening downturn in December.

The retail sales balance fell to -32, down from -11 in the year to November, marking the eighth consecutive monthly decline.

Furthermore, expectations for sales in the upcoming month declined, with the balance dropping to -41 in December from -6 the previous month.

"The retail sector is ending 2023 on a glum note, with the ongoing downturn in sales volumes deepening during the crucial holiday trading period," said CBI principal economist Martin Sartorius.

"Looking ahead, retailers are bracing themselves for a New Year's chill, as sales are set to fall at an even quicker pace next month.

"Strained household finances and higher interest rates continue to take a toll on consumer spending, suggesting that retailers will have to navigate a tough demand environment in the months to come."

Thought this was trading well, Moulding crowing at Q3 statement, seen a rise since but nothing to suggest a major improvement. Need more news about another opportunistic bid to break this up.

I don't think it's ramping Toast. I think it is a fact that THG is under valued by some way. It is only a matter of time and DV is right. A RNS at any moment could completely fry all shorts. That why the Hedge funds keep it under .5% they don't 1. Want to be badly burnt as we have a buyout target on our backs. 2. They don't want mm to know as if he see shorts piling in he will make their day very bad in some way.

It will be a combination of hitting 88p resistance again. The hedge fund bully tactic of all of them doing one day puts on the wider market to create a short livers sell off while the makers have just created new alltime highs for the top 100 etc. I side with Hades and see this as buy the dip it has to be as markets are now turning upward. What bad news do we have to send it the other way. Shorts have no reason there for, run out of steam and up we go again. Any day now and the new will land we all want to hear and boom ? shorts dead in the water.
