Guide to soil moisture sensors: Why use them and the options - Farmers Weekly ==================== Farmers Weekly Guide to soil moisture sensors: Why use them and the options There are many good reasons for growers to use some form of soil moisture-sensing technology to monitor conditions and how the water is being used in irrigated crops. First and foremost, it can make good business sense, as irrigation can be fine-tuned and result in savings or improvements in crop yield or quality that can soon claw back the investment in sensor systems. In addition, with climate change and tighter regulation of water abstraction putting pressure on supplies for agriculture, using water resources more wisely and having a record of doing so is becoming much more important. Sensors can tick these two boxes. Continued...... | ![]() tullynessle | |

24/1/2020 16:17 | Article highlighted by Wyld Networks earlier today..... Water Finance and Management How to Evaluate Connection Options for Smart Water Meters in the IoT Age December 18, 2019 The promise of connected smart meters has been discussed for years, and many utilities have used mobile reading solutions for years, but only a few are starting to look seriously at the implementation of fixed network connectivity, especially in North America and Europe. Wireless connectivity is more widely seen as a key enabler but the array of technology available is broad and different forms of metering have specific requirements that make them better-suited to particular wireless technologies. The LoRa Alliance, explains why low power wide area networks (LPWANs) have the attributes that water metering projects demand. This drive to digitalize water utilities’ distribution networks will result in an installed base of 400 million smart water meters worldwide by 2026, according to ABI Research. This illustrates the sheer scale of the global water metering footprint and sheds some light on the immense volume of data that water meters will collect and transmit. Management of these data will be complex and involve enormous data management and analytics capabilities.
