Washington-based Mortgage Bankers Association says applications rose 15.5 percent last week. Applications to refinance an existing mortgage rose 17.2 percent while purchase applications rose 12.5 percent, to the highest level of the year. "An improving job market is beginning to pave the way for an improving housing market," says MBA vice president of research Michael Fratantoni. "Additionally, mortgage interest rates remained below 5 percent for a second week maintaining an affordability for buyers and lending to an increase in refinance applications.
