Ok. Lets have a debate on the remit of the FCA. There is a belief that they look after shareholders interests. That they look under the bonnet of a company referred to them and check if they are scamming those who bought their stock.

I don’t believe that’s the case - I think they just watch over the rules of the stock market e.g. ensuring companies complete the necessary documentation required or that the required free float is available and aren’t blatantly trying to sell rivet holes to an unsuspecting public via a cartel - but I am prepared to be proved wrong.

Anyway this document should shed some light.



I am going to highlight the relevant part of the introductory paragraph.

“The FCA has a single strategic objective to ensure that the relevant markets function well. The FCA also has three operational objectives:
• to promote effective competition in the interests of consumers;
• to secure an appropriate degree of protection for consumers; and
• to protect and enhance the integrity of the UK financial system.”


Note that “consumers” are not shareholders in general. Consumers in this case are the people who buy the companies products (or not products in the case of SYME).

When the FCA look into a company they are NOT looking into whether said company is spinning its shareholders a line. IMV.

Sadly it’s Caveat Emptor for the shareholders. You buy stock in a company and it’s on you. DYOR!
