21/2/2012 02:14 | 6 July 2011 The current exploration phase of the Production Sharing Contract for the Sangaw North area will expire in November 2011 and the joint venture partnership (Sterling, Addax and KNOC) may elect to enter the next exploration phase which runs until November 2013; the Sangaw North-1 well has fulfilled the work commitment for this next phase. During the coming months Sterling will integrate and analyse the seismic, drilling, logging and testing data before making recommendations to the joint venture group. Angus MacAskill, Sterling's Chief Executive said: "We are disappointed that flow testing has not demonstrated commercial hydrocarbon flow rates in the Sangaw North-1 well. An integrated interpretation of all the data acquired during well operations will be conducted to determine the remaining potential of the Sangaw North structure prior to a decision on future operations." | excellance
20/2/2012 12:31 | Re Sangaw drilling (lengthy post, sorry about that, but maybe worth a read anyway): "The first sub-period of the exploration phase of the Production Sharing Contract ("PSC") for the Sangaw North Block ends in November 2011. The second, and final, sub-period of the exploration phase of the PSC has a duration of 2 years. The drilling of the Sangaw North-1 well has already fulfilled the work commitment for the second sub-period." This basically reads like they have fulfilled their second 'final' exploration phase requirements under the contract they have with the Joint Venture Partner (Kurdistan Regional Government or KRG)... ...and that they now have to wait for the Joint Venture Partner (KRG) to decide if the contract terminates or not ( i.e. if KRG decide that more exploration is warranted). If the contract terminates, they will then most likely need a new joint venture partner to fund more exploration IMHO. However, what do I know? Notes: "The PSC has an initial 3 year exploration period during which Sterling plans to acquire some 200km of 2D seismic and drill at least one exploration well." This contract was signed on: Nov 12, 2007: Sterling Signs PSC For Sangaw North Exploration Block. (see: ) This runs for potentially 5 years and that, therefore, puts it's expiration date at (see links/copied test below) Nov 12, 2012, as far as I can see. c.f. and, within: ... [Page 22/115] Exploration Period 6.2 The Exploration Period shall be for an initial term of five (5) Contract Years, extendable on a yearly basis (as provided in Articles 6.5 and 6.6) up to a maximum period of seven (7) Contract Years starting from the Effective Date. The initial term of five (5) years shall be subdivided in two (2) sub-periods as follows: (a) an initial sub-period of three (3) Contract Years ("First Sub-Period"); and (b) a second sub-period of two (2) Contract Years ("Second Sub-Period"), each a "Sub-Period" and collectively "Sub-Periods". It is understood that the right of the CONTRACTOR to accede to the next Sub- Period or any extension thereof pursuant to Article 6.6 shall be subject to fulfilment of the Minimum Exploration Obligations or minimum work obligations applicable to the previous Sub-Period or extension thereof pursuant to Article 6.6 (as the case may be). and also (within same document): [Page 23/115] 6.7 Subject to Article 6.4, at any time during the Exploration Period, upon thirty (30) days prior notice to the GOVERNMENT, the CONTRACTOR shall have the right to withdraw from this Contract provided that the outstanding Minimum Exploration Obligations relating to the then current Sub-Period have been completed in accordance with the Contract, or it has paid to the GOVERNMENT the amounts specified in Article 10.2 or Article 10.3, whichever is applicable to the then current Sub-Period. 6.8 If no Commercial Discovery has been made at the end of the Exploration Period (including any extensions thereof) this Contract shall terminate. plus (within same document): [Page 31/115] 10.4 (e) For the avoidance of doubt, if: (i) in the First Sub-Period, the CONTRACTOR performs any of the Minimum Exploration Obligations prescribed for the Second Sub-Period in Article 10.3; and (ii) the CONTRACTOR has not elected to notify the GOVERNMENT that it will not enter into the Second Sub-Period (in accordance with and subject to Article 6.4), the performance of such Minimum Exploration Obligations shall be deemed to satisfy the same Minimum Exploration Obligations for the Second Sub-Period. | grbaker
20/2/2012 11:14 | I've got a few of these. Anyone know off hand how much cash they have? Cheers NR. | nick rubens
20/2/2012 10:50 | my understanding of sangaw is that they drilled to get information, and not particularly to discover oil first time out, tho a discovery would have been great! this may seem strange, but they need to get as much geological information as possible so they know where to focus drilling (and cash) in the future. If they had hit a commercial reservoir first time out then fantastic, but they did not... the question is therefore did they learn anything useful, and, are they going to drill again in an optimum location? ...not a word has been said about this for months, so would we be right to consider this to be a dead end? | excellance
