wal - Thanks for your reply. In that case it's just another example of the endless misundertandings the bb format creates! ;)

No hard feelings.

....and some specific thought about what may be happening with the market now, I think the 3 year market wide bull market may be over:

It'll take time for the smoke to clear and to see what the market does in the coming weeks. But I suspect a sideways trending market may be here.

But it's the fact that I've felt for a while that the market wide bull might be nearing an end that makes me nervous and I feared a brutal market wide retracement like this might confirm my thoughts, as such violent retracements at the end of a long bull run often indicate a change in the underlying market trend.

My definition of the end of the bull means we could still retest the highs, but are unlikely to convincingly make new ones (on the indices). I think shares might start fragmenting now, the stronger ones will probably be ok, the weaker ones will fail. Sectors will fragment into winners and losers. I think the oil and resource sectors may rebound and stay strong (at least inititially), due to demand, but it's hard to say for sure, as there is a delicate balance between oil/resource prices and world economic growth.

Interestingly, despite the big retracements, most of the stocks I'm following have stopped at, or bounced off the bottom trendline of their uptrend channels, indicating that any short term bounce is likely to happen now. Technical indicators are also very oversold on most stocks as well, so I've been nibbling at a few.

The strength and sustainability of bounces from these key technical levels should tell us much about the underlying sentiment now pervading in the market.

LOL!

that was mad noticing that it has been him posting drivel incessantly for 48 hours, not me, and 'justifying his existence' with a quick comment about 'the stock market'

incidentally, mad, why do you think i need to justify my existence on the bb?

given that this is the new age of the internet, surely it is a basic right for me to inhabit whatever bb i like, and argue with whichever deranged old man i like?

or have i got it wrong again?

Indeed.

Though, perhaps the time you spend picking the fluff out of your navel might be better spent trying to learn more about the market so you can become a valued member of our community and actually justify your existence on this bb.

It's just a thought.
