Market will do what it wants. If you think it should have done something different then you're trying to second guess where the market is going and that means you have a bias which is not going to help in the long run

Maybe one interpretation, but in reality this update only reaffirms that the expected outcome post the weather related warning will be below the guidance given earlier in the year.

So, steady as she goes for the time being, rather than seeing further growth in all the metrics.

Surprised this hasn't bounced up today after the trading update - it at least reassures that we're on track to meet targets and thus that the recent weather-related warning wasn't hiding anything deeper.

I don't think this has been previously posted:

"We're proud to announce that the Somero® Sky Screed® machine has been named a 2019 WINNER, Most Innovative Product at World of Concrete. Learn how the Somero® Sky Screed® machine is taking FASTER. FLATTER. FEWER to new heights."

Arden Partners: "Move to Neutral on short-term view; FY20e risk remains"

"...We upgrade to Neutral following the recent trading update which saw the shares close 23% in the red. Despite references to adverse weather conditions in the US suggesting a temporary setback for the group, we maintain our fundamental view that ongoing signs of industry and economic headwinds facing the US non-residential construction industry could have a material impact on FY20e earnings. ..."

Apparently when it rains concrete doesn’t pour.

I believe SOM is a Quality company as they satisfy a number of financial metrics I review.

Initially, I was sceptical about the weather excuse so I wrote to SOM and today management confirmed that they standby what they said at the AGM. Subsequently, I reviewed the weather report and it confirms that in the USA, this May was the second wettest of any month across the US in records going back 125 years, and the 12 month period from June last year to May smashed the rainfall record for any 12 month period. Obviously not helpful to people laying concrete.

I think it will take some months to recover their sales. Nevertheless, I have increased my holding, averaging down in preparation for better times ahead.

listened last night to the directors answering the questions posed at the AGM: personally I feel very reassured. top-up opportunity and great long-term share.

I think audio of the AGM will be made available. There is a facility for typing in questions on the website used for the AGM...

Sorry if my post had you confused. The three year chart is telling me we may have already topped out. A lower high was recently established. I also don't buy the weather argument and the current share price pattern is very similar to the last market cycle top. Also from a macro perspective, wider markets seem to be near the top or have already topped. Debt levels are at an all time high. We're near full employment and Indices have been relatively flat the past 12 months.

You said yourself it's hard to sell at the top, then you tell us we are nearing the top. How do you know? Why don't you wait until we are past the top, then sell? Why sell on the way up when you don't know where the top is?

BTW, I'm seriously considering selling today. I don't buy the weather argument and there are lots of other indicators pointing to us nearing the top of a cycle. I'd rather take my profits than get caught with my pants down

Have to agree with EM. I'd avoid cyclicals for long term investing. Primarily because you may find that over the long term you make little to no gain depending on where you buy and sell within the cycle.Stick to defensive / high income and reinvest the divs for long term. Or drop feed into trackers. If you're interested in trading cyclicals, then read anything by Howard Marks. He describes how to make money in cycles. To make money in SOM over a longer time period. You need to buy near the bottom of the cycle, and sell near the top. Easier said than done.
