23/11/2003 11:22 | hi energyi .....i downloaded text magic, spent ages putting all my numbers in, only to find i had to pay for it! It dosen't cost much, but being as i'm tight-fisted decided against it. I did find one a few years ago that sends them for free, but over time and computer probs have lost it. I dare say the cheapest way is to use the facility offered on-line by your phone provider. | dhedra

18/12/2002 21:29 | Tony, has this facility with the following caveat... each alert is chargeable. The talk21 set up page describe charging as... " In order to maintain and improve the service, there is a charge of 10p for each SMS Alert you receive. This will be billed to you by your mobile phone service provider as each provider supports this. There is no set up fee or subscription for this service from talk21. Please note: Mobile phone service provider's actual charges have increased. This means that from 15th July 2002 if you are a Vodafone or O2 user, you will be charged 15p (plus VAT) for each Alert delivered. We will confirm the charges from the other operators when we know them. " I think this is a bit confusing as I read this as 10p (to talk21) plus 15 + vat to operator. Not cheap but it depends how often its triggered I suppose. My worry would be reliability. I used to use the Cellnet share price SMS service and the number of times the SMS was delayed (reply not received in 30 seconds) or misleading (price feed stopped) were worryingly frequent. AFAIK SMS is not a guaranteed delivery. If the operators SMS Message Centre goes into overload (quite possible with the advent of TV voting etc), messages will start to be queued and when the queue is full new messages are just discarded. 18/12/2002 18:01 | Tony, if you've got an always-on connection that checks your email this should be fairly easy to achieve using an email client such as Outlook which can run a chosen application when a message meeting your criteria arrives. The application to run would be either something like the Nokia data suite if you have a mobile phone connected to the PC, or a browser invoking a URL to send an SMS from an external provider ( etc). | thetroll
18/12/2002 17:46 | Locust looks interesting, but doesn't obviously seem to do what I'm looking for. Have also finally had response from O2 saying they have no alternative since withdrawing Genie. If anyone else has any solutions I'd be most grateful. Tony | futurefinder

13/12/2002 00:51 | Check with your phone service provider. They should be able to give you an email address that will forward as SMS. | optimist

12/12/2002 08:47 | I use Q Charts for US trading which will send an email alert once a certain price has been reached. I used to have a genieone web based email account that automatically forwarded an SMS to my mobile when an email was received. This service has now been withdrawn. Does anyone know of any other email services that offer something similar? Thanks for your help. Tony | futurefinder |
