NVIDIA is the one of note today I suggest. |
Yes I gathered your point lolly. |
hazl - whether it comes from SMT's own website or not, it's simply out of date. You only have to Google Northvolt to see what a parlous state they're currently in.
Agreed, one holding's success/demise is unlikely to make/break any fund. But sadly I don't think Northvolt will ever "burst into life again". |
Well clearly we have to be open to fresh news and somebody else contributing makes a difference.
However, the news you say is 'old' comes from SMT's website itself. Remember with investments it is how you do across your portfiolio as whole that counts, and that is the same with a fund. As you know sometimes investments burst into life again. |
OK. Fact is Northvolt is now an irrelevance in the battery industry. Major German automotive clients have just walked away. Estimates vary but Chinese battery manufacturing capacity is around 3x the current global demand. Amazing to think. Where are all these surplus batteries going? And Northvolt has been overtaken technologically too. If SMT indeed has the best tech analysts in the business, they got Northvolt badly wrong. |
hazl - those upbeat assessments of Northvolt are old news I’m afraid.
With hindsight I think we can safely say this was not one of SMT’s good investments & is more likely than not to be entirely written off. |
![](https://images.advfn.com/static/default-user.png) 'Why do we invest?
We are approaching an energy revolution, moving away from fossil fuels towards the electrification of all forms of transport. To facilitate this shift, we are going to need batteries and lots of them. This is where Northvolt comes in. Its mission? To produce the world's greenest batteries by drawing on renewable energy sources and utilising recycled raw materials.
Northvolt has attracted significant talent, capital, and customer support since its founding. It also has a favourable starting point versus its competitors - good systems technology underpinned by a team of top battery chemists, a cost advantage as its first plant is near the cheap hydropower of North Sweden, and important commitments from large European original equipment manufacturers (OEM).
The company has made history by making the first ever lithium-ion battery cell using 100 per cent recycled nickel, cobalt and manganese in 2020. They aspire to build a circular model, with over half of their upstream materials to be recycled from their previous batteries by 2030.' |
You can pick your preferred window in time, according to your particular stance, as well we know. SMT will have sectors covered that look good bets for now, and in the future, to remain diversified and relevant.
Northvolt will be like many companies in it's sector, going through a lull in the green energy space, whilst war mongering goes on, I dare say. Unlike many private investors, SMT does not panic and sell up every five minutes, but tries to have a prudent long term approach. Will this investment be good in the future considerations. Things might well be swiftly altered now Trump has got in. Whether an investment continues to be relevant or not, one thing we can be assured on is that SMT can afford the best advisors to do their research and decide.
IMO |
Yes, Northvolt was valued over 450 million in the March 2023 annual report. By 2024 that had shrunk to 375 million and I'm guessing today it's virtually worthless. Not one of SMT's better investments then. |
Northvolt looking like a dead duck now. IIRC it was a big part of SMT's investment not so long ago? |
Palantir has more analyst sell recommendations than buys. The CEO has sold $650m of his stock. PE in triple digits, be careful, very careful. |
Tesla UP another 9-10% in today's pre-market on reports of favourable changes to self-driving vehicle regulatory framework. |
And indeed Nvidia, which I believe will go on and on reinventing itself.
These are each of them incredible companies, but covered by one purchase of SMT in the ones I'm interested in. Yes, they will go up and down, and yes will be affected by general market turmoil, but these are companies that are jewels in the crown, in my opinion. No advice but those are my beliefs. |
Palantir announced late on Thursday that they are planning to move from NYSE to NASDAQ from 26th. November.
This is important Tech-sector news.
UP another 11% yesterday. Now + 45% since their recent results. And UP 280% YTD (much more than Nvidia's 180%)
The inclusion of Palantir in NASDAQ indexes and benchmarks will most likely have a profound impact on institutional buying - and institutions have recently been stepping up their buying despite the soaring stock price and valuations. Any NASDAQ-benchmark ETF's will almost certainly need to take positions in PLTR.

"for both SchMo and BGUSA"
Also BG's EWI which holds a significant amount of SpaceX |
BIG BREAKING NEWS.
(for both ScoMo and BGUSA)
According to widespread press reports this afternoon, SpaceX is planning to launch a TENDER OFFER for shares priced at $135 per share in December.
This would value SpaceX at $250 billion+, significantly up from the $210 billion valuation when it carried out a similar tender just earlier this year.
Potentially significant news for the SpaceX valuations of the big investments held by ScoMo and BGUSA.

BGUSA has surged 5% + today.
BGUSA's NAV was reported this morning at 259.21p
The official offer price on USA is now 258.5p.
Ignoring any movements today - to all intents and purposes, USA is now at par-to- NAV.
That is remarkable. And has happened quickly.
As the mkt cap of BGUSA is fast approaching US1 billion, it will increasingly come onto the institutional radar.
BGUSA have 20 million shares held in Treasury. My guess is that they will soon be taking them out of deep-freeze and selling them at a premium given the enormous demand for the Trump trade combined with the compelling portfolio holdings.
