Shapero Rare Books has opened a gallery for modern art with an exhibition that reflects the company’s specialism in rare natural history prints. Natural Selection juxtaposes 17th-century nature studies with prints by Andy Warhol and contemporary taxidermy by Polly Morgan, Jaap Sinke and Ferry van Tongeren. Prices range from £300 to £75,000. Confidence high for Russian Art Week in London Collectors expected to brush aside political and economic worries Dealers expect this month’s bumper auction season in New York to boost buying at Russian Art Week in London, which begins this week (21-28 November). “Such an open demonstration of confidence can only help the Russian art collectors, who will probably ignore their own worries about the rouble losing 40% of its value this year, and a fragile truce in Ukraine,” says Ivan Lindsay, the Russian fine art dealer. The auction houses—Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Bonhams and the specialist MacDougall’s are all participating—are also banking on the success of sales in the previous Russian Art Week, in June, to support their offerings. ...Older pieces are available at Shapero Rare Books, which hosts “Luxury in Imperial Russia” (21-28 November), while Trinity House is showing “Russian Icons: spirit and beauty” (22-27 November). Philanderer: Trading statement looks fine. Agree, although I'm just a PI and no great expert at reading between the lines of company statements! Bought a few of these in early September for reasons outlined in my post of Sept 5, i.e. thought it looked a solid, below the radar, 'alternative investment' type company which would hopefully make steady progress over the years. So far, so good, it appears. Barring any major bad news, happy to stay with this for a year or two and see how they go.

Bought a few of these at 82p in May as an 'alternative investment' type share which would hopefully stay under the radar when it comes to general market trends but plod along in the right direction over the next few years. So far, so good. It was actually a toss-up between this and Stanley Gibbons but decided against the latter as it is higher profile and right now appears to have some very ambitious (possibly over-ambitious?) expansion plans. Time will tell.

Just bought a small holding in this as an 'alternative investment' type share. Latest results look pretty solid. Hopefully will be a nice little long-term tuck-away. Maybe the Mail on Sunday will revisit its previous recommendation earlier this year and help give the price a little nudge up (and hopefully not down soon afterwards as happened last time!).

Nope I was wrong there , it was a director`s purchase this morning. "The Company announces that it was informed today that on 5 September 2014 Charles Sebag-Montefiore, non-executive director, purchased 10,000 ordinary shares in the capital of the Company at a price of £0.81 per share."

Market report.. "..Rare books-to-fine art retailer Scholium (SCHO:AIM) edged 1p higher to 81p on an annual meeting update which makes for pleasing reading. Having invested float proceeds to build high quality stock levels, Scholium sees a strong second half ahead and says its Shapero Rare Books business should complete ‘a number of material deals’ this month" Stockmarketwire.
