24/4/2002 12:14 | Unhappy Sage on verge of rejecting Great Park Apr 24 2002 By The Journal Software giant Sage is on the verge of pulling out of the Newcastle Great Park development and finding another site for its £50m headquarters. The FTSE 100-listed company is reconsidering its decision to move there after a series of disputes with the park's two developers. A source close to the negotiations said: "Talks are continuing between both parties, but there is a really serious risk of Sage looking elsewhere." The company declined to comment on the claims but the source added that Sage was "very unhappy" over a number of issues connected with the site. Bosses do not believe that basic infrastructure like water pipes and telephone lines will be operational by the time it moves to the North Newcastle site at the end of next year. Sage is also unhappy with a contract clause which makes the company, as one of the largest landowners in the park, liable for costs if other tenants pull out. And it does not want Newcastle City Council inspectors to be able to halt construction of its headquarters if the building process does not meet strict environmental standards. Sage's withdrawal would be a massive blow for the Great Park development which will contain 2,700 homes as well as a 200-acre business park. Sage was the first business to sign up and the developers hoped the company's presence would attract computer companies to the site, creating the North-East's own silicon valley. Its withdrawal would also be embarrassing for Sage which won planning permission from Newcastle City Council in February. At the time, Sage chief executive Paul Walker said Sage was an "anchor" tenant and would hopefully attract other IT companies to the business park. However, it is understood that Sage, currently based in South Gosforth, Newcastle, is not considering a move out of the region and would relocate somewhere else in the North-East. But a spokesman for the development consortium, which is made up of housebuilders Bryant and Persimmon, played down any disagreements and said he expected contracts to be signed within the next 10 days. He added: "These are very, very complex issues but we are talking on a daily basis. "It would be a big blow (if Sage pulled out). They are an anchor tenant but it would not be an absolute disaster. With them or without them, the site will continue to be developed." A spokesman for Newcastle City Council, which helped dream up the site, said: "We have been talking to Sage and there are some tricky negotiations to go through. But we are totally confident that the deal will be signed to the satisfaction of all the parties." | games | |
