Albertan first Canadian swine flu death

Alberta health officials confirmed yesterday the first death in Canada connected to the swine-flu outbreak, announcing a woman in her 30s who died last month had a mild form of the H1N1 virus.

Officials said the northern Alberta woman, who had chronic pre-existing medical conditions, died on April 28. Officials have identified the swine flu as a "contributing factor" to her death, but are awaiting further tests to determine the exact cause of death.

There is no evidence she travelled to Mexico recently, officials added. The province is not identifying the woman at the request of her family. Officials also would not provide details on what medical conditions she had.

When the patient died, there was little sign she had the flu, said Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta's chief medical officer.

However, officials decided to test a sample from the deceased woman for swine flu on Tuesday, when they confirmed a member of her family had contracted the disease.

On Thursday, tests at Alberta's provincial lab confirmed the dead woman had caught the swine flu.

Officials said they have dispatched nurses to the community to monitor those who might have come in contact with the dead woman or her relative.

About 300 people attended a funeral for the woman this week, before it was confirmed she had the disease.

Those who attended the funeral have been advised to inform the province of any flu-like symptoms, said Dr. Gerry Predy, senior medical officer of health for Alberta Health Services.

Top flu expert says contagious swine flu could mix with deadly bird flu.

If that happens the world is going to need an awful lot of Relenza and I wonder if they know already that it is going to happen.
