I do not understand why, if Apple holds its cash piles in New York, it is not charged tax on a remittance basis. The tax laws do not need sorting out Globally for the US to sort out its own tax system.

Chancellor George Osborne has announced a change in tax rules to prevent businesses claiming capital allowances for costs met by other firms.

The legislation, which comes into immediate effect, will mainly affect gas and electricity distribution firms.

It will prevent them making new claims for historic costs that have already been paid by their business customers.

HMRC estimates that the claims could have resulted in up to £900m in lost taxes.

The pound strengthened for a second day against the dollar as an industry report showed U.K. house prices jumped the most in 18 months on an annual basis in May.
Sterling climbed versus the U.S. currency after reaching a two-month low yesterday. Home prices rose 1.1 percent from a year earlier, the most since November 2011, the Nationwide Building Society said in an e-mailed statement. They climbed 0.4 percent from April to an average 167,912 pounds ($254,700).
The pound rose 0.3 percent to $1.5172 at 7:26 a.m. London time after falling to $1.5009 yesterday, the least since March 14. The U.K. currency was at 85.51 pence per euro.

US & ASIA

In the US last night, the Dow fell 106 points at 15,303, the Nasdaq lost 21 points at 3,468 and the S&P500 shed 12 points at 1,648.

In Asia today, the Nikkei was recently down 452 points at 13,874 and the Hang Seng off 110 points at 22,444.

WTI crude oil traded at $92.79 a barrel and Brent crude at $102.43.

Gold settled at $1,391 an ounce.

LONDON MARKETS

In the corporate diary today, interim results are due from OMG, Public Power Corporation and Standard Life European Private Equity Trust.

Final results are scheduled from Sound Oil, Severn Trent and Tate & Lyle.

A trading statement is expected from Kingfisher.

Archipelago Resources, F&C Private Equity Trust, Hochschild Mining, Inch Kenneth Kajang Rubber, Mallett, MCB Finance Group, Metminco, Northbridge Industrial Services, Northbridge Industrial Services, Parity Group, Restore and Tangiers Petroleum host their AGMs.
