I should add also that they will give credit if you can demonstrate assets (e.g. portfolio valuation).

I have been using Cantor for a couple of weeks now. Still haven't managed to get the trading sw to work - but I haven't tried very hard because I know it won't work from the office anyway.

Telephones are answered immediately and staff are polite and helpful.

Spreads are, if anything, slightly more favourable than I had expected. I think perhaps the market spreads they begin with are slightly better than I see on ADVFN stockwatch - and this then feeds through to the final spread.

I am currently losing money :o(

I use fairshares in conjunction with market eye but now dropping market eye and just using fairshares for all my tax comps rather than tracking the portfolios. I am intending to use adfn for that, but as I have 16 portfolios with over in total £20m invested it is a bit of a job. There are big advantages to take on the 30 day when buying back and whilst accountant can work out your situation it is better to plan disposals and see the effects before actually doing it which you can on fairshares as an old chairman once told me "accountants can only tell you what happened yesterday."

I have a spreadsheet that matches trades under the anti-BnB rules.

If you want it leave your email.

The main bits are in VBA.

I think all he should need is the company - the total transaction cost - number of shares traded – the date of the transaction – settlement date(this is for me) and for sells in the tax year that were bought in the previous years the balancing trades.
I keep the spreadsheet religiously up to date as I make the trade and tick them off when the contract notes arrive so it seems a small task.
I used to record commission stamp duty etc but waste of time as all that matters was what was the total cost of the transaction.
I keep a running total of the balance and add in dividends (not many!) along the way.
It made my effort for the tax submission a relatively pain less task. Mind you as that 99/00 was a stunning year the subsequent CGT is frightening but you got to make it to pay it and at least as I took the total CGT hit by going to cash in March 00 and now I trade without thinking of the CGT effects.
Regards
M

PS
I back the file up in three separate ways, as there is so much work in it over the year.

M - probably a good call. I was going to give him a hand this year as the stuff's due by Dec.31st and I've been really slow getting it to him.

I just record all my trades on an Excel spread sheet and give my accountant (a local guy working for himself from home) that to work out all the complicated stuff.
He charged me £200 for the 99/00 with over 400 trades to deal with that included splitting it all up between my wife and me and completing the forms.
Now I reckon that was good value for money and as it is coming from a chartered account should not get too much scrutiny from the Taxman.
He has saved me his fee on little tricks I would have missed if I had tried to do it myself.

M

Oddball - they've removed the demo. If anyone's downloaded a version then I love to get it from you.
Can't believe that Updata want a grand for it. If I remember rightly Fairshares only sold for £50 before.

Try this link.

I also prefer Fairshares but disappointed Updata now has an involvement. However, so far so good with new products under test.

Cheers guys. Will try your suggestions.
My accountant can worry about the taper calculations etc. I just wanted to give him something to start with.

N.B. there are two aspects to CGT calculation, the first is the original gain/loss (which involves RPI calculations for purchases before 1998) and the second the CGT taper calculations, which are extremely complex and to my knowledge few programs manage them. To do CGT taper you need to consider all of your assets that are subject to CGT at once (and not each share/asset individually) since gains need to be matched to losses in the most advantageous way.

Technet, its not something I have to worry about as in Holland they dont have CGT, they have just introduced a wealth tax, but according to my accountant its only relevant to assets held in Holland ...Hoorrrahhhhhh!!!

TechNet: Fairshares, now bought by Updata. . However that will be expensive if you are just using it for CGT.

Anyone know of any software, be it commercial, shareware, freeware or BBuser written, which can work out your Capital Gains bill?
It needs to be able to understand the 30-day rule and also which shares were sold if you do a sale of stock which was part of a multi-buy.

i.e. BUY 10 ARM at 5, BUY 10 ARM at 12, SELL 5 ARM at 15. Were the 5 shares sold from the first or second purchase?

You help would be appreciated.
Cheers Paul.

I use IG which I found fine until they brought out their new software which I have had nothing but problems with having to reload and not working with freeserve ect,the original version I never had any problems with.
