Quindell UK deal tipped to boost Slater and Gordon share price

Save for later
LAW firm Slater and Gordon’s shares could potentially rise more than a fifth if it is successful in acquiring parts of UK insurance and legal services firm Quindell’s business, according to UBS.

Quindell said yesterday it remained in discussions with Slater and Gordon about a disposal of its professional services division, including one deal structure involving a £640 million upfront fee and a share of receipts from noise-induced hearing loss cases.

The Australian firm, which has been undertaking due diligence on Quindell since December, said it has not yet made an offer ahead of the March 31 deadline.

“If Slater and Gordon acquired Quindell’s insurer and insurance broker channel-related assets and 50 per cent of reported revenue is deemed sustainable, we estimate this would lead to the share price appreciating to $8.99,” UBS analysts said in a note.

At 11.35am (AEDT), shares in the company were trading at $7.05 each, down 5 per cent.

The outcome of the deal is a key catalyst for the law firm as it would gain significant market share in UK, access to insurers and insurance brokers’ customer acquisition channels, and exposure to noise-induced hearing loss cases, they said.

Slater and Gordon has grown in both Australia and UK markets mainly through acquisitions in recent years, and last month said it was on track to become the largest consumer law firm in Wales, after flagging the proposed takeover of two UK firms.

UBS said there are otherwise no large competitors that the law firm is likely to acquire, which meant it would gradually have to transition to organic growth over the medium term.

UBS has a “neutral”; rating on the Slater and Gordon stock, with a 12-month price target of $7.45 a share.
