22/10/2023 11:21 | The wars in Ukraine and the middle east are propaganda wars as well as shooting wars. 'Enemy' news is 'propaganda', 'friends' news is 'managed'. Is the BBC 'biased' and if so in which direction? What we can say with certainty is that in the Israeli /Palestinian conflict, the supporters of both sides claim that it is biased against their side, and do their best to bring pressure to bear to 'correct' the language and tone to favour their side. That is not unusual. It happens when any contentious issue is in the news, be it Brexit or a war. Think about it. You have seen umpteen reports of vast Russian casualties and material losses. How many reports have you seen of Ukrainian military casualties and material losses? You have seen umpteen reports of Russian 'premeditated strikes' on schools , wedding parties etc with detailed reports of damage and casualties. How many reports have you seen of Russian strikes on military targets, with detailed reports of damage and casualties? How is it that the Russians are both militarily incompetent, but able to achieve precision when 'targeting' civilian targets? If the reports were all true and balanced, not only would you expect the Russians to have been thrown out of Ukraine by now, but the Ukrainian flag would be flying over the Kremlin! When the UK is backing Ukraine though, would you seriously expect the reporting to be otherwise? But you don't hear protests about 'BBC anti Russian bias'. Why? Because whatever we may think about the way the war is being fought, or whether it could and should have been avoided, we all broadly want Ukraine to win, even if we have different views as to what would constitute an acceptable 'win'. It is different in relation to Israel /Palestine. The UK does not have a dog in that fight, though there are fairly small but very noisy sections of our population whose highly partisan feelings range from 'Israel can do no wrong' on one side to to 'Palestinians can do no wrong' on the other , with the great majority in the middle believing either that that both are ghastly and deserve each other, or that both are more sinned against than sinning and it is all just a terrible never ending tragedy for both sides, or flipping from the latter to the former of those two views when confronted with complaints and demonstrations by the partisan sections of the UK population. So you would expect complaints and and disagreement about bias in the news reporting. It is human nature to want to hear one's own views expressed, but complaints about bias intended to achieve that usually serve only to alienate the openminded and non-partisan sections of the population. Most extreme reactions achieve the exact opposite of their intended result. Treat ALL news from ANY war zone as one sided, potentially unreliable, or even plain wrong. News, the struggle for hears and minds, is an instrument of war. the journalists deliberately or unconsciously slant their reports to provide what their own audiences want to hear, and only have the material provided to them by those in control on the ground anyway. Nor is any journalist equally welcome in both Russia and Ukraine, or Israel and Gaza, so no single journalist or news organisation can see the picture from both sides. Follow a range of news sources. Then at least you will appreciate how much you don't know, how little can be accepted as totally reliable. | 1knocker | |
21/10/2023 20:23 | Civilian deaths in Gaza vastly exceed those in Ukraine over the past couple of weeks. Deaths caused by Russia = 'wilful killing'. Deaths caused by Israel in Gaza = 'unavoidable collateral damage'. So far as I am aware, Russia has not set made it an object of policy to cut off food, water and medical supplies from the Ukrainian civilian population. All those killed are equally dead, but their deaths are reported differently depending upon whether they were caused by 'friends' or 'enemies'. So long as such double standards continue, there will be no end to the death and destruction. | 1knocker |
