03/1/2008 13:27 | Sorry if the link has been already posted. Not got time to read through last few days of action. WIMAX in at number 4. Pipex not mentioned, but they were the ones who put in the infrastructure at Milton Keynes. | markieparkie
03/1/2008 10:18 | Dumped the rest of my PXC earlier on todays rise for a hefty loss. This is nothing more than an orchestrated rumour no doubt so some big boys can dump into. Goodbye Pipex you big let down :( | stevi1111
03/1/2008 10:09 | process taking a lot longer than i expected, thought would be out pre xmas, looks like the ubs team needed some sun so i am now hoping for full details within two weeks,[gives them time to get back to their desks and earn a crust] | bubface
03/1/2008 09:58 | no matter what, they can have all my shares (300k) @ 12p.. even though i'll make a loss.. | dutch2
03/1/2008 09:50 | B2: The frequencies in that first auction aren't really suited for WiMAX and PXC (via Freedom4) already hold three 28 GHz licenses anyway so don't need more. Independent report for OFCOM here: The really useful frequencies are up for grabs in the second auction - that suits WiMAX perfectly and is the same band as that used for the big US roll-outs. I'm still unsure of WiMAX in the UK. Maybe if a big player snaps up the right frequency we might see something but look at the facts: Freedom4 is offering businesses FWA 4 Mbs and home users 1 Mbs in limited areas. Via HSUPA, Vodaphone is already offering a fully mobile 7.2 Mbps service and will do so nationally. Unless WiMAX gets it's data rates higher and, in the case of Freedom4, mobile I can't see it competing unless in specialised areas such as Milton Keynes and local government contracts. That said, I agree with steviIIII - this might be a good opportunity to sell if the hype produces a spike. That guess of mine of 12p including the Freedom4 stake is looking a bit generous, but you never know... | veryoldbob
03/1/2008 09:40 | bubface - how long do you this process will take to finalise ? | dutch2
03/1/2008 09:38 | my calculations would indicate £250m plus in cash if report is correct, though personally i think they will achieve a bit more, therefore over 10p per share ,with more hopefully to be released from escrow from bb disposal.think 50% freedom4 worth £50m plus, another 2p,still hope to win the price guess comp. | bubface
03/1/2008 09:29 | As I thought...... No value left here. 10p maximum....less than that more likely IMO. Good opps to sell this spike. | stevi1111
03/1/2008 09:29 | vobob, I dont know if freedom4 plans to bid at the first auction for additional spectrum. I believe the spectrum to be suitable for wimax, fixed and mobile, but i am open to correction. We can't have mobile wimax without a network, therefore we have to start with fixed wireless access first, and upgrade later as uptake increases. Perhaps different operators will cooperate? There is, worldwide, a tidal wave of wimax about to hit and ofcom plans for the UK to be part of it, they are actively minimising and removing restrictions to make better use of frequencies. The recent decision concerning UKBroadband demonstrates this wimax positive attitude... | bamboo2
03/1/2008 09:01 | Am I mistaken when thinking that Dubens himself had apparently suggested a value of c£200m for the two divisions when the 'strategic review' was first presented? Considering that these two units have supposedly continued to grow since then, it would be interesting to know how/why his new vehicle now values them at £130m! As I said, my recollection could be incorrect... | danny111
03/1/2008 08:20 | If that 130M figure is correct, that makes the current share price about right. PXC got 187M after adjustments from Tiscali, which makes say £317, minus about 100M of debt leaving £217M and with 2.4bn shares in issue, that works out at 9p a share. Extra value may come from a stake in the demerged Freedom4 to bump that up a bit. That old City phrase "buy the rumour, sell the fact" comes to mind. PXC has always risen on rumours and then fallen when the real facts come out. | veryoldbob
03/1/2008 08:01 | Could start getting interesting now? | troys
03/1/2008 07:11 | Pipex up on wireless bid vibe By Emily Rotberg and Neil Hume Published: January 3 2008 02:00 | Last updated: January 3 2008 02:00 Pipex , the internet and telecommunications company, was in focus late yesterday as bid rumours swirled. Following the £210m sale of its broadband and voice business to Tiscali in September, Pipex put its web hosting and business service division up for sale and said it would demerge its fledgling wireless business. The talk in the market yesterday was that the two divisions could fetch up to £130m and that proceeds would be returned to shareholders. One interested bidder is Oakley Capital Private Equity, in which Peter Dubens, the founder and chairman of Pipex, is a partner. Pipex closed 0.7 per cent higher at 8.53p. | troys
02/1/2008 19:04 | Actually, there is an auction closing soon: the 10, 28, 32 & 40 GHz spectrum which had a provisional date of Jan 16th for applications. This bunch of the spectrum isn't much use for WiMAX and according to OFCOM's own reports hasn't had much interest. This from Quotient Associates: "The evaluation of potential applications above suggests that interest in the four bands intended for release is most likely to be for fixed wireless access, backhaul for cellular or FWA networks, and video links for PMSE users or CCTV networks." PXC already holds 3 28GHz licenses so is unlikely to bid for more. I suppose a rival could set up a FWA network using the spectrum but, as Freedom4 is finding out, fixed wireless isn't that attractive... It's also been in consultation since 2005! | veryoldbob
02/1/2008 16:37 | "looks like we may have a result on the first ofcom auction very soon." Not sure about very soon. On Dec 19th, OFCOM released this statement: "Ofcom is consulting on detailed rules for auctioning the spectrum in order to offer the maximum flexibility in the way that the bands can be used. Subject to ongoing analysis, Ofcom expects to make a statement early in 2008 and to hold the award in the summer. All licences are proposed to be tradable." So don't expect a result 'till the summer, by which time the PXC strategic review should just about be over... | veryoldbob

01/1/2008 12:50 | The recently launched Asus Eee PC is selling at a rate of about 4 or 5 million each year. The price is competitive and it uses Linux instead of a Microsoft operating system. It is touted to be planning to use Poulsbo next time. If so, this should be a good launch. | richard xii |
