03/12/2007 19:39 | Woody56 - those aren't the easiest of questions! Not sure the share price is so dependent on Freedom4 - it's a joint venture so only half of any profit/loss will come back to PXC and it seems to not be part of the takeover offer: Oakley are only bidding for the Hosting and Business Division with Freedom4 being groomed for a demerger. As to the value of a demerged Freedom4: that does depend IMHO on the license variation. PCCW got their 3.4 GHz license changed in about 9 months so that might set a precedent to allow PXC to get theirs changed quicker. However PCCW's license is in a slightly lower frequency range and there are suggestions that the range Freedom4 holds (3.6 - 4.2 GHz)will have more difficulty getting a variation. The Register published a quote from an internal PCCW email that stated: "All this means that there is even more chance of 3.5 GHz becoming a popular band for WiMAX. It is becoming clear that 3.4 - 3.6 [GHz] is great spectrum to own (and having it above 3.6 GHz is less good - i.e. Pipex/Freedom4 in the UK - as getting the mobility and required power levels may well be a struggle for them, with potential satellite interference issues)." PXC claim to be in discussion with OFCOM but no consultation has been published yet which may mean they could get the nod without a consultation process or mean the process hasn't even started yet and the demerger will happen before any license variation. So it's anyone's guess really! I take the fact that Peter D doesn't want Freedom4 for Oakley as a big hint that it's not going to be as profitable as some once thought... | veryoldbob
03/12/2007 17:05 | Perhaps someone with more knowledge than i,comment on how difficult it might be for Freedom 4 to gain a new license, and what timescale?as everything regarding the company and the share price seems to depend on this,or does it.thanks jim | woody56

02/12/2007 14:38 | The Google bid has been trailed for some time. At 700 MHz, looks like WiFi rather than WiMAX. This story from ThinkBroadband could be more important: "The Washington Post has covered news that Verizon Wireless, the second largest mobile network operator in the U.S., is looking to begin trials next year of a technology called LTE (Long-Term Evolution), based upon UMTS release 8. Further still, it states that Vodafone in the UK, part owner of Verizon, are expected to also take part in the trial. Whilst not ratified as a standard yet, the 3GPP LTE project is looking to improve efficiency and lower costs whilst improving the service available to users. It offers speeds of up to 100Mbps (Megabits per second) downstream and 50Mbps upstream. This is a step up from HSDPA/HSUPA which is currently being rolled out which offers a maximum data rate of 14.4Mbps. Current deployments in the UK see 7.2Mbps in some areas from Vodafone, with other networks to follow with similar speeds next year" Full story here: This has to worry the WiMAX gang: if 3G/HSDPA in the UK is already at 7-14 Mbps and can be tweaked up to 100 Mbps, who's going to touch the 1 Mbps service from Freedom4? Freedom4 needs to up it's speeds and get the license changed ASAP or the mobile companies are going to leave it trailing far behind... | veryoldbob
