FT:

Phoenix Group, the acquisition-hungry UK insurer, is the frontrunner to buy Sun Life, a smaller UK rival being sold by France’s Axa for as much as £500m.

The deal could be sealed as soon as next week, although people close to the situation warned that nothing had been finalised.

I wouldn't rule that out, biz ... anyone buying it would expect a decent discount to MCEV, which wouldn't please the big shareholders.

The market may be coming round to the idea that Phoenix, being unwilling to overpay will end up as one of the consolidated rather than (self-styled) "largest consolidator".

If the share price really did approach Barclays' 766p target, the yield would be 7% for 20 years on a wasting asset. Then it would surely be a bid target.

I am happy to hold some but see this as looking abit toppy now , it's come a long way.It used to trade 500-600, then 600-700, then 700-800, now 850-950, we might see 1000p at some point....
I have always felt that if you ever met anyone who had a Pearl/ London Life Scottish whatever policy held with PHNX , the best advice would be to tell them to cash it in and buy some PHNX shares.Advice still holds!

Robsy - yes, it says the current high share price is anticipating a series of deals, which they've been largely unable to close so far. Their target of 843p is in the middle of the 2015 range.

I agree. Mkt cap is significantly less that MCEV so I am equally happy to receive my dividend for the next 20 years rather than undertake a complex and potentially costly transaction. Any new deals need to be at a similar discount to MCEV imo but I am not sure how achievable that is - we risk being outbid by other players.

For what it's worth I'd go along with that. I'd be happy to see it just run down to zero and am suspicious of new deals unless they are adding value for us rather than the directors.

Reasons behind Barclays analyst's underweight view on PHNX:

Closed book insurer Phoenix Group Holdings (PHNX) is on the hunt for acquisitions again, getting back to its original purpose.

Barclays analyst Alan Devlin retained his ‘underweight’ recommendation and increased the target price from 766p to 843p after a meeting with Clive Bannister, chief executive of Phoenix. The shares edged 5p lower to 934p yesterday.

‘Bannister was keen to point out that Phoenix has been through a significant journey over the past six years, and is now at an inflection point where it can consider M&A deals, the original raison d’etre of the company,’ he said.

‘The company has made significant progress, and our “underweight” recommendation is based purely on valuation.

While we believe the dividend is sustainable for the next 20 years, we have to discount the dividends at c.4% to get to the current share price. In our view, the market has already priced in a dividend increase on the back of a potential deal.’

Phoenix prospects are good but it needs to secure a deal -

Income prospects at closed book insurer Phoenix (PHNX) but analysts warn it needs to ‘consummate a deal’ soon.

Shore Capital analyst Eamonn Flanagan reiterated his ‘hold’ recommendation but does not have a target price on the shares, which rose 2.1% to 937.5p yesterday.

‘Phoenix reports a resilient set of results for 2015 with the cash, dividend and the market consistent embedded value broadly as we had expected and as per consensus but the operating profits well ahead due to some one-off features,’ he said.

‘The income attractions remain considerable and robust but it really needs to consummate a deal in the near term so as to “oil the wheels” internally, deliver “proof of delivery” for the market and enhance the market consistent embedded value. Hopefully, now with Solvency II out of the way, the company can move forward on some deals.’

Barclays are on crack - 766

I sold too soon, that's never happened before ;-)

I think there is a weight of buying after the results, when that dries up it will settle back down again.
