Scattered along Scotland's west coast, this chain of isles is one of the country's most beautiful places to visit. Think shimmering white-sand beaches, sparkling seas and crowd-free hinterlands – it's one of the UK's last remaining secrets, and for good reason.

Algarve, Portugal
The red-cliff coastline and pristine whitewashed Moorish villages that dot the south-western region of Portugal have started shifting crowds away from the region’s busier hotspots. It has its own sunny microclimate and affordable places to stay such as Casa Mãe in Lagos make it a great winter-sun option too.

Death Valley, California
Known as the hottest place on earth, Death Valley reached a record temperature of 53°C in 2019. It’s a vast area of extremes: with snowy peaks, scorching sands and wildflower meadows, the National Park encompasses a wide range of different landscapes. One of the most popular locations is the multi-hued Artists Palette, a series of eroded hills whose colouring is due to the oxidation of natural metal deposits in the mountains. ‘Star Wars’ fans will be keen to see the site that inspired the planet Tatooine.

Provence, France
In summer, endless fields of lavender in bloom turn the Provençal landscape purple. At the end of the season, when the crop is harvested, honey, soaps and pastries are made with a fragrant dose of the plant.

CASTLE ELTZ
Knights Castle of the Mosel Valley

Eltz Castle (Burg Eltz) has one of the most unique profiles of castles, a tall cluster tower of capped turrets, in the form of construction called "Randhausburg", a circular walled fortress residence around a courtyard, and has the distinction of being one of the very few medieval castles in the region west of the Rhine to have not been destroyed in war and to survive in much of its original form, at least since the 14th Century. Visually striking and solitary in its verdant valley, the castle has often been mentioned as a favorite among travelers and castle lovers.

Beautiful pictures one and all.

When I look at the pictures of old buildings on narrow streets, I always recall happy times wandering up and around many of these wonderful old areas, that tourists love.

Unless these places remain, will our grandchildren enjoy the modern blocks of buildings in wide open spaces, as most of us enjoy visiting these historic places of great beauty.

Our quality of life has been snuffed out with buildings full of tiny flats, and with people that have no culture.

The SWCP is truly wonderful gift to us all and free to use - although its fair to say it costs a bit in accommodation along the way. 630m.

Walk it this year before the whole thing slides into the sea or the H&S brigade close more of it. 2mph avg up/down hill. 3-4mph on the flat.

Thanks as ever Freddie for brightening my day.
