THOMAS COOK: Broadband destination
January 01, 2004 Philip Smith

Thomas Cook's director of multimedia, Katherine Gershon, believes broadband is the tour operator's big online opportunity.

Extract:
No less significant is the move to partner the Online Travel Corporation (OTC). Thomas Cook decided not to rely on in-house technology development but to stick to what it knows best: travel. This should remove the technology workload, but the OTC deal is significant because, on one level, the two companies compete. On another, Thomas Cook is used to that. "On the high street, the products and brochures of our rivals can be racked alongside our own products in our shops. It is one of the strangest things to get your head around when you look at the business for the first time," Gershon admits. Not so coincidentally, in the last year, OTC decided to look at licensing its technology to other travel firms, even potential rivals. Vic Darvey, group sales director at OTC, says: "We can make far more money licensing our technology and our travel experience. We have to look at new revenue streams and one way is to do this for travel companies." Previously, OTC concentrated on its own sites and a network of some 60 partners, media owners and ISPs. But, both Gershon and Darvey are keen to stress that the relationship between the two firms is a partnership. "We have a contract agreement," says Gershon. "But this is more than simply a software licence. The fees are both transaction and revenue-based. If we win, they win, and vice-versa."

Strange price action with the lid being maintained on the price although constant buying will move it up eventually.

Somebody seems to be picking up stock piecemeal although there has been a couple of big chunks too. I can only assume that it is one of the 12 or so instutions who bought a total of £8m worth last week at 15p selling with a clear 15-20% profit?

Did anyone see the IC article last week?

Question please.

Will the price settle to 15p reflecting the extra shares in issue?

Funny that, by my reckoning, nearly 3 million more shares have been bought than sold over the last four days yet the market makers are dropping the price. Is it because its Friday? Must be a buying opp.

cir - that's very good news with ONT being in the top 10. In fact only 0.5% behind Ebookers. Probably also ties in with their trading statement and 300% increase in sales in first few weeks.

I wonder if this extra traffic has much to do with their partnership with the Times online. The travel offers I recieve from the Times are very good and very tempting.
