15/2/2024 21:33 | Farage is still at it. From the Telegraph: Nigel Farage has warned the incoming chief executive of NatWest that he will try to scupper the sale of taxpayer-owned shares in the bank unless there is a culture change in the wake of the debanking scandal. The president of Reform UK says he will issue court proceedings against the bank within days if it does not settle an ongoing compensation claim with him and promise to stop closing the accounts of customers whose views it does not agree with. more... I doubt he can do anything to stop a Retail Offer if Hunt decides to go ahead, which does seem pretty likely. | polar fox

14/2/2024 21:06 | FT: NatWest poised to confirm Paul Thwaite as chief executive NatWest is set to confirm interim boss Paul Thwaite as its permanent group chief executive, with the state-backed lender preparing for the government to launch a public share sale before the end of the summer. The appointment is subject to approval from NatWest’s board, which is due to meet on Thursday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the plan. A formal announcement is expected on Friday at the same time as the bank’s full-year earnings. Unquote I think it's not a good sign - over the years they have found it increasingly difficult to find really competent CEOs and the slow slide towards mediocrity simply continues, IMO. | polar fox

13/2/2024 13:43 | Equities drop sharply as US inflation disappoints some. CPI is down from 3.4 to 3.1, but some had pencilled in 2.9. In addition, core CPI is unchanged at 3.9 - the Fed won't be happy with that. The DOW on IG lost a quick 300 points. | polar fox
13/2/2024 08:45 | Nationwide increasing tracker and fixed rate mortgages Nationwide is increasing some of its tracker and fixed rate mortgages by up to 0.25% from tomorrow. Those borrowers affected include new and existing customer deals, plus those looking to borrow more or switch rates. It comes after Santander announced it was going to reduce some of its mortgage products earlier today. Justin Moy, managing director at EHF Mortgages, explained that swap rates (which impact the cost of lending money) have increased over the last few weeks, meaning rising rates are not unexpected. "Lenders will inevitably be dancing around the rates over the coming weeks, balancing cost, service levels and appetite for certain types of business," he said. "An interesting few weeks coming up for borrowers and brokers alike." Mortgage rates on the high street have fallen over the last two months as markets have become more optimistic about a base rate cut this summer. However, today's move by Nationwide suggests David Hollingworth, a director at L&C brokers, may have been onto something in our 6.18am post in suggesting rates may have bottomed out for now. 12/2/2024 16:41 | The government will want to give the public a good value for money entry point which will probably be around the 180 mark. I can therefore see this falling a bit more until this is finalised and the monkey is off our back. Obviously the results could well affect my 180 price up, down or flat but still think I’ll keep watching for now. I wonder how many shares private investors will be able to buy? | xongkudu |
