28/6/2016 22:18 | Good point about the US revenue benefiting from a lower £ - great to see a FTSE 100 constituent which may benefit from the recent turmoil! Also I agree a defensive play at times of high volatility. | bountyhunter
28/6/2016 21:12 | Skinny, Didn't it get to £10.34p? However, don't get too excited, isn't it because the £ is weak against the $? If the £ has dropped 3% and the price has increased by 3%. The value of NG is still seen as the same so the rise is expected. Many would say it's down to defensive plays, but remember, a lot of Grid revenues are generated in the US. | utyinv
28/6/2016 08:19 | A new high this morning @1017.00. | skinny
17/6/2016 09:07 | If they (Gov)decided to take the System Operator off NG then it's not such a big deal! Out of the £2+billion profit NG makes, the SO element of the business accouns for only £70 million of that whole figure. That being the case, if the SO was taken off NG then the interference by the regulator and DECC in future would not be warranted. That leaves NG open to charge more for the use of system. Inter Connectors are part owned (50%) by NG and what John Pettigrew should spell out to the committee of MPs is that Grid is not a charity! The media and City are ignorant of what is involved so the fall in share price is typical ignorance and hype trying to manipulate the SP! | utyinv
17/6/2016 09:07 | Telegraph BusinessBreak up National Grid to prevent conflict of interest, MPs sayNational Grid should be stripped of its role managing the UK energy networks due to the potential for conflicts of interest, MPs on the energy select committee have said.New independent "system operators" should be set up to manage supply and demand on Britain's national gas and electricity networks, the committee said in a report.National Grid gets regulated income for owning and maintaining the electricity transmission network in England and the gas distribution network across the UK.As system operator, the company also has formal responsibility - as well as an influential position - to advise on the level of new network investment needed."National Grid could advocate more capacity than necessary in order to be allowed to build, then own, such assets," the report warns. It said there was also a potential conflict of interest in National Grid's non-regulated business developing interconnector cables to import power from abroad, since as system operator it was in a position to call on interconnectors or other options to help keep the lights on.National Grid's control room, where it manages supply and demandNational Grid's control room, where it manages supply and demand CREDIT: ANDREW CROWLEYAs a result, the MPs advocate the creation of an independent system operator. "Despite strong efforts by National Grid itself and Ofgem to mitigate the potential for conflicts of interest, it seems intractable and growing," they said.Angus Brendan MacNeil MP, the committee chairman, said: "National Grid's technical expertise in operating the national energy system must be weighed against its potential conflicts of interest. The Independent System Operator model has worked in the USA. It is time for it to be brought to these shores."Amber Rudd, the energy secretary, hinted at a possible breakup of National Grid last year when she said there was a "strong case for greater independence for the system operator", a position that was reiterated by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in response to the MPs' report. However, the National Infrastructure Commission, which was tasked with looking at the issue, concluded that despite "the potential for a conflict of interest" it found "no evidence" that Grid had acted to the detriment of consumers. It warned that "fundamental change in the immediate term risks delaying action over the more important task of making our networks better run and more efficient" and recommended that "the creation of an entirely independent System Operator should not be treated as an immediate priority but should be kept under review".A spokesman for National Grid said: "We take very seriously the need to provide confidence that any potential conflicts of interest are handled correctly and have a lot of experience operating in an environment where this is a key part of what we do."We are currently working with the Government and with regulators to ensure we continue to manage potential conflicts as our role develops."There is little evidence that an Independent System Operator model would provide any benefits that would justify the cost to households, potential disruption to much of the energy sector, and the risks to security of supply such uncertainty could create."A spokesman for the DECC said: "We are working alongside National Grid and Ofgem to see how we can ensure our electricity system is as secure, flexible and independent as possible, whilst operating in the best interest of consumers."The MPs' report also suggested that regional system operators may also need to be set up to balance supply and demand on distribution networks as increasing amounts of local-level power generation ate added to the system.Currently the companies that own distribution networks have a "blind, passive role" when it comes to managing their operation, but should in future use smart grid technologies to take "responsibility for balancing energy flows" on their grids, the report said. | mj19

17/6/2016 08:32 | sp slipping back, maybe punters looking to chance bigger recoveries elsewhere? nai | mike24
07/6/2016 22:56 | Was going to buy more pre ex divi but forgot, regretting now. Long term these look pretty solid imo. | tim 3
07/6/2016 10:21 | a bit of recovery since XD, but chart looks weak several months to wait, if any special divi is paid out | mike24
03/6/2016 17:07 | I think so, £10 short term target again. The divi incease limited to RPI may be a little disappointing but that's on top of a yield which is already 4.4% at the current share price. | bountyhunter
03/6/2016 16:47 | back on the way up? | neddo
02/6/2016 11:57 | Let's hope John Pettigrew is as Investor friendly as Steve Holliday was. little dissapointed increase in divi was below expectation (even if it was average RPI). As mentioned this could be due to regulatory pressure but the regulator must also realise nothing in life is free! I am also a little disappointed that the Distn Networks which were planned to be disposed of by the end of 2016 will not be returned to shareholders in a form of special dividend until first quarter of 2017! However, with the Distn networks valued at £11b and Grid hope to retain a 49% stake (for the interim) that makes the part sale valued at approx £5.39 Billion. There is talk that Grid will make an acquisition of another US utility to the value of between £3 - £3.5 Billion leaving £2.39 Billion - £1.89 Billion to be returned to shareholders (maybe more if they shelve the idea to buy another utility). However, based on the conservative figures above then with 3.7 billion shares in circa this should provide a special divi of between 64.5p - 51p / share. Hopefully more pressing questions on the intent will be made at the AGM! | newbank
02/6/2016 10:53 | I've top sliced this morning a bit. In recent years there has been weakness following xd and I hold quite a lot of these. So I am happy if they go down or up from here over the summer which is a nice situation to have | davr0s
02/6/2016 10:51 | On the other hand, with its international links, when the pound devalues following an exit vote, then the share price will rise. | gbb483
02/6/2016 08:37 | buyers could wait till post vote might be even cheaper | mike24
01/6/2016 13:07 | Big xd tomorrow - wonder if it will bring out any buyers this afternoon? | davr0s
21/5/2016 04:51 | PP11,For sure | garycook
20/5/2016 13:08 | Interesting... "dividend is slightly below expectations" yeah but still one of the core holdings for any yield portfolio... not many companies with their visibility on long-term earnings | postmanpat11 |
