21/2/2011 13:36 | Looks like a good set of results, today's high just 10p short of the ATH in October. Dividend 16.5 euro cents per ordinary share will be paid on 12 May. (From StockMarketWire) Paper and packaging group Mondi plc hiked its final dividend after reporting a 116% rise in underlying pre-tax profit to EUR394m from EUR182m for the year to December. Group revenue was up 18% to EUR6,228m from EUR5,257m. Underlying operating profit increased by 73% to EUR509m from EUR294m. Underlying earnings per share rose 151% to 47c from 18.7c. The group recommended a final dividend of 16.5c, up from the previous 7.0c, making a total rise of 111% to 20.0c from the previous 9.5c. Cash generated from operations was down 10% to EUR778m. Net debt fell 10% to EUR1,364m, which the group said followed strong cash management and business disposal proceeds. Mondi said it had achieved production records at six out of its eight largest paper mills. Modernisation of its Russian pulp and paper mill was completed and running to plan. The results reflected a strong operational performance and significantly improved trading environment, with price and volume improvements across all main products. Of the underlying operating profit of ¬509m, the Europe & International division contributed ¬431m, South Africa division ¬64m and Mondi Packaging South Africa ¬51m. However, an operating loss of ¬4m from the Newsprint division was 'extremely disappointing'. Input costs, particularly wood, pulp and recycled fibre, increased by about 28% during the year. Mondi said demand growth over the last 18 months had been very encouraging, with volumes in most grades and geographic regions back at satisfactory levels. Further demand growth was expected in 2011, though at more modest rates. CEO David Hathorn said, 'After the turmoil of 2008 and early 2009 created by the global financial crisis, the recovery noted in late 2009 continued into 2010.' This had translated into an improved return on capital employed, increasing 4.7 percentage points to 12.3% for the year, though short of the targeted 13%. He added, 'We are confident that the group's integrated low cost position, focus on performance, and the contribution from the major investments made through the down cycle position the business well for the future.' Shares were up 9p at 544p in early trading. | enami | |
