MRF - if you ban most PIs, the market will be even less liquid. Why can't they lose money if that's what they choose to do? They might even be lucky and make it ...

Indeed, the ignorance here is unbelievable, with no clue what tangible and intangible means, etc. Some people need to learn basic accounting and reading basic company accounts before they are allowed to invest on their own. There ought to be a basic exam people take before buying listed shares, and until they reach a certain pass rate, they should only be allowed to invest in managed funds imo.

The majority of their assets are, as MRF pointed out, owned by sub-contractors operating under a franchisee type basis.Their net tangible asset value on the BS is negative to the tune of £200m, with very high net debt the BS looks very weak IMO.

hamhamham1,

Those Electric buses for the West Midlands will all be owned by Zenobe & only leased to National Express West Midlands, despite what the press announcement says. This is the same as the current 100+ Electric Double Deckers already in service & the 20 Hydrogen Double Deckers are owned by Birmingham City Council & only operated by NXWM.

NX have also sold & leased back a number of West Midlands based bus depot in the past couple of years.

The £400m refinancing will lead to increased interest payments of £15-20 million a year, against a business which is performing as expected, if not better. Selling part of the business or a capital raise would be a short term fix and not for the long term health of the company. Interest rates will be higher for longer, markets are jumpy and punters are nervous, which is when you get opportunities like this.

What actually happened here for such a well-known company to wind up with no assets and such crazy debts? Was it subjected to some sort of major fraud at some stage?

But only if rates stay higher for longer...camp still divided...the long end yield rates are lower than short end rates...smart money not convinced higher rates for longer...CB's have built up rate ammo for the next cycle of rate cuts if jolt to markets due to unknown news...

The business can't reassure in the medium term that it can remain solvent without a significant fundraising. It should have fixed its term funding rates for the long term and had an aggressive repayment plan whilst interest rates were near zero and raised capital when the shareprice was much higher to help reduce that burden. This company failed to fix the roof when the sun was shining. Now, it may not find its capitalisation will support a highly dilutive fundraising merely to remain solvent as it drowns under ever increasing longer-term interest rates. It's a bit of a ponzy scheme really, shareholders have been well and truly shafted imo.

Redwing agreed. With hindsight perhaps the size of the dividend reinstatement was a tad on the high side but the interest rate landscape has frankly changed unexpectedly in the interim. The BOE have been dire policy guiders simultaneously - unprecedented times.Agreed this is all about rates anxiety. The company needs to reassure again in the upcoming interims that their business / cash flow remains on track such that debt servicing remains under control. And agreed about the rates peaking point - that these shares are literally a geared option in that regard.

'My retirement fund' you are a clueless tw*t. National Express has been the best run transport operator for the past ten years or more. First Group got into a financial mess and Go-ahead had big rail issues. NEX only problem was going into the covid lockdowns with high (but serviceable debt) when all of a sudden their revenues went to zero for a while. No fault of management at all and operations got back on track quickly.

Reinstating the dividend too early was a small mistake, but the entire reason the shares are falling is rising interest rates. This is because that debt could get dangerously expensive as and when each tranche matures, but don't forget the cash generating ability of bus operators. Once rate expectations peak the shares will rally fast.

Quite simply incredible to see this here after their trading update. Either there is a massive profits warning due (highly unlikely) or a serious bounce in the stock price post results
