Look at the remuneration and nil paid share options.
Look at the returns to shareholders.

It ain't rocket science.

Can you clarify why you think director rewards are obscene?

Mercia is like a Crypto currency.
You cannot see what lies under the hood, or where it sits in a labyrinth of complexity that constitutes the accounts.
The only visibility is the poor performance of the share price and the obscene rewards to management.

I went to the virtual event a few weeks back and got particularly excited about one of the featured companies, Uniphy, who have developed a patent protected "smart surface enabling technology", that the impressive CEO claims could "make them a Unicorn plus in a short space of time".
Interested, I thought I'd see how much of this we own, so I checked-out if MERC has a direct B/S holding. I couldn't find any reference to it as a direct holding and neither can I see it as a direct holding in any of the VCT's that MERC manages, so I sent them an email asking for more info.

Hi
I am invested in Mercia and attended the investors presentation, which was very interesting.
One of the companies highlighted is Uniphy, my question is, Do we have a direct balance sheet investment in this company? I ask, because I can’t see that we do. It looks like a very interesting company so I’d be interested to know how we are involved with it , directly? or through the VCT’s or other funds?

hxxps://uniphy.global/technology/.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks in advance.

No response as yet. Can anyone help me? Is two weeks a reasonable time to get a reply? Does anyone else have experience or pointers about how best to get info from companies because I have two or 3 stony silences from companies I am invested in
where I have unanswered questions. Is there a better approach?

I fear we have a big seller and further to go. Can't think of any other reason for the dire share price performance.

I think we are all getting a bit jaded, well I know I am, but I do think the future looks better than the share price suggests. MERC has a lot of cash and a stated ambition to use it with M&A. I am hoping they can use it well to buy some more VCT assets on the cheap like they did before.

Time for more options, then we know where the bottom is close to.

Sp on death spiral for almost a year now in spite of the apparently positive outlook that management appear to project. Maybe they live in a parallel universe to us pi's

I'm jave been no fan of the management, see posts from 2 yrs back, but at the right price it has decent characteristics to be a hold.

I hold.

Frustrating but part of the course right now.

Why shouldn't people who no longer hold the shares not be interested in the figures? I don't hold currently, but always on the lookout out for new opportunities and would consider buying back in if there are some positive developments.

Take a look at the share price performance of IPO, GROW and get the idea of what could have happened so far. Very poor share price perfornance and discount to NAVs substantial etc etc. At least Merc has a better yield.

The share price isn't doing well and the management certainly do look after themselves (I've found this rather common) but this is a bog standard AGM statement not a trading statement.

There are results out next month and the Annual Report was published not much more than a month ago.

I think people will get all the figures they want.....even people who no longer hold shares !!??

On a personal view I think that they have done well and the volume of cash is considerable ....not a bad position to be in at this time.

I think this is what is niggling me. I think merc has real potential and it is delivering already in some ways BUT I feel like the bod are running a business inside the business largely for their benefit- so far at least. I mean when they do a deal it triggers all sorts of bonus payments to them. I need to look at this.

It may well do OK eventually, but I have much less patience now with companies that don't appear to look after their shareholders, particularly those that award themselves massive bonuses despite mediocre performance.

Wish I'd done the same with IPO at a higher val

I am becoming restless. For all the apparent progress ,the share price remains in a downward trend. I am frustrated by the steady awarding of options on discounted shares. Does anyone know if the employees actually buy them or are they just issued by the company?
I think I need to get a better understanding of the remuneration packages.

That's it Dave. They are beautifully positioned. They have to find tomorrow's winners but that is what the staff and offices are there for. What i like is the fact that they are profitable without windfall investment gains. They have the Resources to buy some more AUM as well.

Edison;
As a regionally focused specialist asset manager, Mercia does not expect to experience the same highs and lows in valuations seen in more international growth markets. Mercia offers a defensible UK regional proposition, well aligned to the government’s levelling-up and SME agendas, with its venture portfolio supplemented by private equity and debt funds, investing across the digital media, software, life sciences and engineering sectors. With recurring fee income from FUM of £758m at 31 March 2022, Mercia has demonstrated that its model is sustainably profitable net of central costs. This allows management to offer a progressive dividend policy, with an FY22 dividend yield of 2.7%. Management’s strategy is to grow FUM organically, supplemented by M&A, further building recurring fee income. Mercia’s shares trade at a steep discount to NAV and on an FY22 P/E of just 5x.
