Rise in number of region's ambulance staff off with stress

The number of ambulance staff in the East Midlands taking time off due to stress and mental health problems has almost doubled in the past five years.

Figures obtained by the BBC found that 518 members of staff were off with stress and mental health issues in 2015/16.

This compares with 271 in 2011/12.

The figures show a consistent rise:

2012/2013 – 270
2013/2014 – 351
2014/2015 – 485
The union UNISON has said this rise in the number of people going off with stress is because of extra targets and a lack of resources.

We'll hear from the ambulance service shortly.
